Gisborough Hall, an ivy-clad country-house hotel in the North Yorkshire countryside, is praised by The AA for its "richly furnished" rooms and "excellent" food.

This AA 4-star property is on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It's around 30 minutes' drive from the picturesque fishing town of Whitby, and is just over an hour from York.

The former home of the prestigious Chaloner family -- the manor of Gisborough was acquired in 1558 by Thomas Chaloner, an ambassador for Elizabeth I -- Gisborough Hall has 70 bedrooms, spread across the main house and the Woodlands Wing. The hotel's Revival Zone spa offers treatments (supplements apply) and deals on spa packages.

There are plenty of dining options: you can order morning coffee in the cosy Drawing Room -- which has open fires -- take afternoon tea in the Main Hall or have a pre-dinner drink with woodland views on the Terrace. Once dinner rolls around, you can choose from the fine-dining AA-Rosette Chaloner's Restaurant or the less formal De Brus Bar & Grill, which serves contemporary dishes made using locally sourced ingredients.

Having visited once, several years ago, for a wedding, I was aware of the hotel. We booked a dinner, B&B special rate and were looking forward to a 'good' hotel, however, everything about it was excellent, rather than just good. Every member of staff was professional, courteous, helpful and friendly. The hotel itself has been decorated to a high standard. Rooms were large and comfortable and quiet! The food was lovely and the service at dinner and breakfast was attentive. All in all, it was a perfect stay and we hope to be back!
