Overview

Hotel Kabuki is a boutique hotel in the heart of Japantown, the largest Japanese enclave in the US. As befits its setting, the property has East-meets-West décor and a Japanese-style garden with bonsai trees and a koi pond, and it offers direct access to the Japan Center malls, where you can find traditional Japanese food and Hello Kitty merchandise.

The property is a 5-minute walk from the quiet residential neighbourhood of Pacific Heights; The Fillmore music venue and high-end shops and restaurants on Fillmore Street are also five minutes' walk away. The hustle and bustle of Union Square and the farmers' market at the Ferry Building Marketplace are half an hour away by bus -- you can catch the number 2, 3 or 38 bus from Japantown to the Downtown area.

Visit the Kabuki Springs and Spa in the Kinokuniya Building (on the corner of Fillmore and Geary) for a taste of a traditional Japanese bathhouse. It has a hot pool (heated to 104 degrees Fahrenheit), a cold plunge pool, a dry sauna and a steam room. The hotel can assist guests with scheduling appointments. In-room spa treatments are also available, and there's a 24-hour fitness centre at the hotel. There is no on-site restaurant, however a buffet breakfast is served in the lobby every morning.

Guest rooms have a Japanese look, with paper lanterns, sliding shoji screens and marble bathrooms -- many featuring traditional Japanese soaking tubs, which are three feet deep. Kabuki rooms are on floors 2-4 of the Garden Wing or on floors 4-10 of the Tower building, while Deluxe View King rooms are on the higher levels (floors 11-16) and offer city views.

Travelzoo tip: Visit during The Nihonmachi Street Fair, held on Post Street (between Laguna and Fillmore streets) from 6-7 August in 2016, to experience international music, food stalls and artisan wares.

Under renovation right now so the breakfast area was a modified lobby. Air conditioning didn't work so we just turned it off. Old style so the renovation is very much needed.

I have been here before and this was a GREAT deal so I took it. Japantown is one of our favorite areas of the city.

Glad to hear you are renovating the hotel. The bathroom doors seem very odd and the nook with the tall vase is just a waste of space. I like that you can walk onto the balcony. The doors are thick so you don't hear the street noise. It's also really dark :)

It is a beautiful hotel for the price. The promotion was offered because the hotel is undergoing renovations so there is no dining room. They did offer a hot breakfast buffet, included in the Travelzoo deal. It was great for the first day or two but the choices don't change much.

Air conditioning didn't seem to work in the room so it felt a little stuffy. Everyone on the staff was nice and helpful.
