The historic French Quarter in Charleston sets the tone for The Vendue, which is not just a hotel, but a culturally enriching experience. Over 200 years ago, the two buildings that now host The Vendue were warehouses for storage, trade and auctions. Hence the name "vendue," which means auction; originating from the French auctioneers who worked in the area centuries ago.
The hotel has come a long way since its humble beginnings, reinventing itself with a $5.5 million renovation into a sanctuary for art lovers. The Vendue now comprises two lavish buildings across the street from one another, coming together as one high-end boutique hotel.
Traditional guest rooms feature Egyptian cotton sheets and neutral beige tones. Some rooms are classically designed with four-poster beds, rustic hardwood floors and the original exposed brick walls. Large windows let in plenty of sunlight and sights of the city (except in Interior rooms, though some of those do have skylights). Signature rooms are are decorated with reproduced antique furniture for a vintage feel, while the Premiere rooms offer more space and many have great views of the city. Premiere rooms also include perks like a complimentary daily reception with wine and even milk & cookies in the evening.
Sculptures and paintings line the walls of the lobby, eating areas and guest rooms. Pristine white-marble and dark-hardwood floors flow into the Drawing Room restaurant, where the marble floors and the chocolate-colored wood bar are prominently featured against charcoal walls. The Press, which now serves Starbucks coffee, was once the home of the South Carolina Gazette. A homage to the newspaper is splayed on the walls in the form of white and sepia newspaper pages. A mix of antique chandeliers and modern lighting fixtures brighten each space.
Make sure to check out the two-level rooftop bar -- it "boasts some of the best views in town" (Charleston City Paper) including the Charleston Harbor and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and serves a seasonal menu of specialty cocktails along with a large list of local craft beers.
