From lobby to penthouse, the Millennium Knickerbocker Chicago hotel is steeped in history. The lobby maintains its original 1927 opulence, with double-height ceilings, arched windows and wrought-iron balconies. Sneak a peek at the crystal ballroom, a splendid, barrel-vaulted hall dripping with gilding and crystal chandeliers. Another oak-paneled banquet hall on the 14th floor used to be a casino reputedly run by Al Capone's brother, and still has a secret escape stairwell to the street.

The rooms are clean, bright and contemporary, with smart TVs and coffee makers plus marble-tiled bathrooms with rainfall showers. Guests interested in the hotel's lurid history -- which includes a stint in the 1970s as Hugh Hefner's Playboy Towers -- can take one of the property's weekly tours. The in-lobby Martini Bar offers a 1920s-inspired cocktail menu with over 50 varieties of the namesake cocktail to choose from, plus a midday tea service.

The hotel is just around the corner from Michigan Avenue, which has some of the city's best shops, and Oak Street Beach is just a few blocks north. A view of Chicago's most iconic landmarks is steps away at 360 Chicago at the John Hancock Center, an observation deck with panoramic views of the skyline and Lake Michigan.

Very touristy location.

Our stay-cation was very enjoyable and part of that enjoyment was our stay at the Millennium Knickerbocker. It is conveniently located for attractions and restaurants in the River North and Streeterville areas. It's an older hotel (Al Capone and his brother ran a speakeasy there.), but the hotel has been renovated recently, so the rooms (and especially the bathrooms) are modern. The hotel is half a block off Michigan Avenue, so you have the convenience, but with much less noise. The windows are double pained, further reducing any noise. A small negative: the windows were very dirty, but if they were clear, all we could see from our room would be the windows on the building across the street. The beds were softer than I am accustomed to, but I slept well, with no unusual aches or pains when I arose in the morning. For the money, this is an exceptional bargain.

I thought the hotel was good value for money, but the rooms probably need an update. The hallways smelled musty and the rooms were a bit dingy.

The hotel is conveniently located off the magnificent mile near Lake Michigan. It was about a 20 min walk to Navy Pier. Great service, rooms are nice.

The hotel was in a great location. We took the bus, which was around the corner , to and from the train station, to the art museum, etc. Water Tower Place was.very close. They did overcharge us for our room, but were quick to fix it when I showed them our voucher.

Excellent hotel, location and staff. Double beds instead of queen size were a problem for two adults. Parking was expensive.
