Overview
Perched 15 stories atop the Chicago Sun-Times building and next door to the Merchandise Mart, the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza is located in the bustling River North neighborhood but retains a sense of calm due to its upper-floor location. Thanks to its location overlooking the Chicago River, the hotel's main draw has to be the truly excellent views of the Chicago skyline.
Even the base-level Premium rooms are spacious and feature updated furnishings, panoramic photos of the city, 49-inch flat-panel TVs, Bath and Body Works toiletries and in-room coffeemakers. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and if you can upgrade to a Skyline View room, do it. Despite opening onto a 10-story atrium, rooms are mostly immune to street noise since they're so far above ground.
Most guests make time for a drink and the corner views at the 15th-floor Cityscape Bar, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows just off the lobby. Head to the on-site restaurant (breakfast or dinner only), Merchants Cafe, for elevated American comfort cuisine for any meal of the day. There's also a large indoor pool -- fairly rare in this part of the city -- along with a dry sauna and a good-sized fitness center. Also, parking is quite reasonably priced compared to other downtown hotels at $39 per night.
Visitors find themselves within walking distance of the Loop, as well as the famed Magnificent Mile, chock-full of chic shops and restaurants, while the surrounding River North neighborhood is home to trendy restaurants, art galleries and buzzing nightlife. You're also close to the city's ever-growing Restaurant Row along west Randolph Avenue, featuring multiple restaurants from celebrity chefs like Stephanie Izard and Rick Bayless.
No need to weather the elements; guests can access the CTA Brown Line train station from the hotel through Merchandise Mart. Attractions like Navy Pier, Millennium Park and Lincoln Park Zoo are a quick cab or train ride away, making this hotel a wonderful home base for exploring the whole city.
