Why We Love It

  • It's worth spending a night here just to slip down the waterslide that runs through "The Tank" -- the Golden's Nugget's 200,000-gallon shark tank
  • A $15 million renovation in 2014 upgraded the rooms set within the Gold Tower
  • Two blocks from the Fremont Street Experience open mall

Overview

The Golden Nugget Las Vegas offers great value because it’s located Downtown rather than on the Strip. A classic Old Vegas-style hotel two blocks from the Fremont Street Experience open mall, the Golden Nugget is a large resort with four towers, eight restaurants and four bars. The newer Rush Tower has 20 percent larger guest rooms than the Gold and Carson Towers. The Gold Tower got a $15 million makeover in 2014.

The property has two large performance venues, a spa and a casino with favorites like Three Card Poker and Let It Ride, but the hotel’s main attraction is The Tank, a 200,000-gallon shark tank. The novelty? A 30-foot transparent waterslide tunnels through The Tank, where you glide past zebra, tiger and nurse sharks. After, you can take a Tank tour with a marine biologist or relax at the Hideout infinity pool.

Another plus is you don't pay the nightly resort fees (up to $25 per night) that many area hotels charge. Instead, guests at the Golden Nugget pay only a $5.65 daily Downtown destination fee that includes access to the seven-block open-air pedestrian mall outside of the property.

Was told by the Valet Parking a Bell Hop could not take my luggage because they were to packed and should go to the other side near self parking which did not have a Bell Hop service. The Bell Hop service was only where I first went. A hotel employee went over to the Valet service and scolded them. Checking in and checking out did not have agreed pricing with Travelzoo and Hotel and Hotel themselves. Hotel room was a Non Smoking room but smelled like smoke and later found cigarette butt on top of headboard that burnt the headboard. Room construction on floor began early in the mornings and also everyday a very loud speaker would come on in the room stating they were testing the emergency system and that it was only a test but would seem to last for a least a half hour over and over. Did it at least once in the afternoon that I heard. Hallways were not clean.

Unfortunately the slide through "The Tank" was closed and we were hoping to do that. It's one of the reasons we chose to stay there.

First hotel I have ever stayed where they didn't have complimentary coffee. You have to rent a coffee machine for $27 and buy the coffee to go in it at $16 for 4 cups of coffee. Weird

The only real downside I saw was that the rooms weren't really as "renovated" or "refreshed" as they made them out to be.
