Dating back to 1923, the Art Deco Hotel California was once a favourite with Hollywood superstars including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Orson Welles and Clark Gable, and is still a smart, central option.
Located in a quiet but swanky area just off the Champs Elysées, the hotel is a 10-minute walk from the Arc de Triomphe and a block from the upmarket boutiques on Avenue George V. Equally handy is the Metro station (George V) just at the end of the street, providing easy access to sights like the Louvre and Notre Dame.
The chic Le Cadre d'Or Restaurant serves a full American buffet breakfast from 7am, while the Lounge Bar offers traditional French dining later in the day. Meals can also be taken in the leafy courtyard (open April-October), which has a lovely mosaic fountain. There's also an elegant bar dressed in red velvet and polished wood, with a list of over 200 different whiskies and a wide selection of French wines.
The bedrooms have views over the street or the central courtyard. Standard rooms can be on the smaller side, but all feel airy and come with free Wi-Fi. Upgrade to a Deluxe Premium Room for a private terrace, or a 2-storey Duplex Suite to revel in views from the seventh floor.
