Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa is a family-run hotel with stunning views over the Eden Valley and nearby Appleby Castle. The property holds four silver AA stars, awarded to illustrate that this is a highly recommended hotel.

The hotel is well placed for hiking holidays, sandwiched between the Lake District fells, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It also has well-tended gardens to explore. Fairy-tale Lowther Castle and its 130 acres of gardens (open daily, 10am-5pm) are 25 minutes' drive away.

Rooms are split between the main manor, a coach-house annex and the newer garden wing, and feature country-style furniture and views over the putting green, gardens or fells beyond.

Guests can access the spa for an extra £20 per person. The spa has a steam room, a sauna, a sky shower, a hydrotherapy pool, a bubble pool and a foot bath.

The hotel has two restaurants; the 1871 Bistro and a fine dining restaurant which holds two AA Rosettes. There's also a well-equipped games room for a spot of pool or table tennis.

The only downside is that the external Hot Tubs are not 'hot'. The weather was 2 degrees but the water in the hot tubs was only luke warm and you couldn't sit for very long. Both hot tubs were the same. There were also NO loungers to relax on which I would expect in a spa area as you don't really want to spend 3 hours in water. The food was excellent though.
