This refined manor-house hotel was built in the early 19th century. Once the home of famous polar explorer Francis Howard Bickerton, it is in a peaceful location near Oxford, and within easy reach of attractions such as Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Wildlife Park.

Central Oxford is a 10-minute drive away (note there are access restrictions in the city centre) or a 20-minute bus ride from the village of Iffley, a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel is also a pleasant 40-minute walk from the city, along the River Thames. The 12th-century St Mary's Church -- one of the UK's finest examples of Romanesque architecture -- is within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. As well as its famous "dreaming spires", Oxford's attractions include the Ashmolean Museum's collection of art and archaeology, and the Bodleian Library. Other area attractions include Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, which is a 25-minute drive from the hotel, and Cotswold Wildlife Park, which is a half-hour drive away.

Each of the hotel's 77 comfortable rooms and suites has free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and complimentary hot chocolate and biscuits. Upgraded and family rooms include extra sitting and sleeping areas, with larger suites including 4-poster beds or whirlpool tubs, iPod docks and laptop safes. There are three wheelchair-adapted rooms, and a further 15 boutique, contemporary rooms in the nearby Elm House, which can be hired separately for large groups.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the hotel's relaxed Iffley Blue restaurant. There's also a bar serving food throughout the day, a terrace, a lounge, a conservatory, and meeting, banqueting and event spaces.

Lovely setting but first morning breakfast was chaotic nobody knew what was going no menu presented had to ask and ask other 2mornings someone stepped in and explained what was what. The bedroom don't know if it was an upgrade we needed a fridge for my husband s medication was in the attic the heat generated by the heat wave was unbearable

The room was very nice and the new sitting area around the fire looks lovely.

Staff were all lovely and the refurbishment didn’t impact our stay it really was the restaurant it was like a canteen and the menu didn’t fully cover what was in the dishes and lacking in choice. For me the restaurant spoilt our stay as we like to eat in the restaurant so we can relax and enjoy ourselves with no driving etc involved. The wine list was also very poor.

If we had known about the ongoing building work we might not have booked. It would have been helpful to know about this in advance.

We found the mattress too hot and uncomfortable. Did not get sparkling wine with cream tea. Location was great for getting into Oxford on the bus and our accommodation was lovely. Sadly no veggie sausages available for vegetarian breakfast on the menu.

When I asked for the prosecco which was supposed to be included with the cream tea I was told that the offer had expired - even though it was stated clearly in black and white on my confirmation. She did honour it though but I had to ask for it. I also had to ask for - and receive - the room upgrade when the hotel was clearly not very full. In fact when I first showed them our reservation I was told that we would have to pay for the upgrade. Finally, the hotel is undergoing renovations and when we first arrived I thought it had closed down. It was a bit off-putting trying to find the entrance to the temporary reception - one had to walk almost to the (restaurant) door to read a tiny sign saying that it was the temporary entrance. The whole experience rather reminded me of Fawlty Towers esp with its dated decor and foreign (although friendly) staff although they were obviously much more competent!!

Staff were polite and food was well cooked. Very handy for Oxford city centre. Buses easily accessible and frequent so saved on driving and looking for parking.

Very basic scruffy room. No upgrade as suggested. Patio door lock jammed shut so no air or open window overnight. We mended it ourselves. Phone call at 12.15 am saying our disabled bathroom alarm was triggered. They had the wrong room !! Breakfast a fiasco. Took 45 minutes. They did refund this but time wasted enjoying our weekend. Too busy and understaffed.

Hotel was comfortable but in my opinion it is not 4* as the rooms don't have air conditioning and the outside was not as well kept as it could have been.
