Hotel was lovely. Outside area was particularly good - rattan furniture, horse box bar and keyboard player entertained with gentle music on the Sunday. Staff were all friendly and helpful.

We stayed 2 nts our first cosy room was very tatty ( Rm 5) we had to pay extra to move to another room (21) then next night we were moved to another cosy room(17) when we woke in the morning we were overpowered by a foul smell from the bathroom, it was so bad we couldn't go in there ? Drain smell so had to use the hotel public toilet to wash and brush our teeth.

We both enjoyed our stay
Unfortunately we both had Upset Stomachs my self 4 hours after eating and my partner the next morning and all the following day after
I did speak to the manager to say that I’m not complaining but just wanting to let them know and to ask if any other customers had experienced any of the symptoms we had suffered
I did receive an apology and that he would speak to the chef when she was back on shift

Easy to find & park, good welcome, nice room but it lacked a chest of drawers to put clothes in (room 8) which was unusual. Maintainence man very pleasant when he came to fix the door knob, then to fix the TV reception. Food very good, unfortunately the bill was incorrect on leaving, & difficult to check as there was a queue & the printout was not fully itemised. This was only partially remedied by the lady on the desk, but not explained in any detail, so we paid suspecting it was still wrong, which on checking it probably was. The difficulty seemed to be in subtracting the allowance already paid.

Staff were excellent throughout our 3 days. The restaurant looked lovely in the evening but we didn’t use it as no one was in it. Breakfast fabulous quality. Room was very tired and lacking hanging and drawer space, but they were quiet. Blinds all too short and gaps whilst using shower. It was clean and adequate though.
Other Comments
The “pegs” for hanging clothes were not good. Two out of 4 were broken and loose and things fell off. Bedside cabinets need drawers. Blinds too short and light came in plus visible from outside. Room was just tired and a little drab.

Easy to find, the hotel is very well placed being only 10mn walk to Stamford town centre. We found the entrance a bit odd really since you are greeted by the restaurant staff first and the hotel reception is tucked away in a small corner at the back. We had a warm and welcoming welcome though, which was nice. We were given room 9, the ´Daphne’ room, which should be a ´medium’ room since we paid for the upgrade (although the bed didn’t match the website picture). It is a nice room but could do with simple improvements (I’ll come to a more major improvement later on), such as making a little less bland with more pictures on the wall and dried flowers in the fireplace for example. There is also nowhere to put your clothes (jumpers, etc), except for garments going on hangers. A couple of shelves under the tall mirror wouldn’t have come a miss.
Another important point is that it is very awkward and narrow to get into the room (for normal size people!) as one of the bedside tables was only narrowly avoiding touching the door as you open it! Moving the bed a few inches towards the other wall (there is plenty of space) could solve that inconvenience! If centering the bed was the idea before placing the sockets into the wall, well we noticed the bed isn’t actually centred with the wall between the two windows anyway!
The cupboard keeping tea and coffee facilities out of sight would be great if if was level. Being an old building the floors aren’t even - which is understandable and fine, and even charming, of course - but when you are dealing with liquids, cups of hot drinks, etc it can be very hazardous. Another reasonably easy fix for someone who knows what they are doing.
The staff (day and night) at reception were very helpful. Those in the dining room too, although one or two of the young ladies were a bit over-enthusiastic, ie kept interrupting, asking if everything was fine.
The meal was very nice, although my husband noticed that at the table next to us the main course he had chosen was clearly more copious with the garnish/vegetables and sauce than his which was a bit dry.
There had been confusion when ordering the wine - we ordered a 500ml carafe of Muscadet but the waiter came with a full bottle. He changed that very graciously. When the bill came we had been charged for 2 set menus and 1 à la carte, when it was 1 of each. Again the waiter corrected this very graciously and apologised for the mistake.
Now to the main problem - this is where I feel I should have given the hotel a 3, not 4 star at the start of this survey… guess I am feeling generous. The main thing was we hardly got any sleep during the night. Nothing to do with the bed as it was very comfortable. The street noise - cars passing incessantly throughout the night - kept us awake, which really spoilt our next day as we were tired and had a long drive home too. The two window system just doesn’t do anything at all - it really needs triple glazing on the inside windows to make a real difference.
So, yes we would consider staying there again but would insist on a quiet medium room, ie not facing the Main Street. Don’t know if they have rooms facing the gardens of Burghley House… since I am never keen on rooms facing car parks. I really don’t know why I wasn’t more demanding from the booking stage. I usually am more specific about the room we want, which is usually worth it.
I think that’s it… a lovely hotel with great potential, on the ground of Burghley House (unfortunately close at this time of year) and a stone throw from the very attractive town of Stamford which is an architectural showcase.

Yes, I’d like to share my comments with The William Cecil, as unfortunately when we checked out the receptionist didn’t ask us if we had a nice stay… if she had we would have informed her about what you are about to read - the great and the bad.

We enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable but a little stark. Everything we needed was there but it lacked a cosy feel and would have been better if there were two chairs and more plug sockets. However it was a good sized room/bathroom and lovely breakfast and the traffic noise from having a room next to the road did not spoil our stay.
Other Comments
The shower had a temperature control that meant it was warm rather than hot and the entrance hall was being decorated whilst we were there so it smelt of paint and felt like there was work in progress and no member of staff mentioned or apologised for this. I was going to mention these issues when we left but I was staying there for my birthday and did not want to spoil our stay.

We stayed at the William Cecil to provide us with a base for exploring Stamford together. The location was excellent, with good amenities/decor within the hotel & attentive staff throughout. The room was well appointed, nice view & included fresh milk, cookies + coffee machine. We ate within Stamford for our evening meal but enjoyed a very nice breakfast within the hotel in the morning; all prepared nicely and a scenic view from the atrium, which was lovely.
The only item(s) to let the room down were a shower screen that didn't work (lower seal was perished, water flooded the bathroom) and some masking around the doorway (as they were painting/renovating) but overall didn't detract from a lovely room. It was a tad warm overnight, even with the rads turned right down, but again, that wasn't an issue. We would certainly visit the William Cecil again, if in the area

I took my lovely Mum away for a much needed night away and the hotel was a perfect venue to do just that.
It felt very warm, inviting and special and the staff were lovely. The Room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean, but a little noisy to due it being on the main road; but that aside, it was really lovely. The food was delicious and the service was very professional and welcoming.
Other Comments
The only thing that took the edge off of our stay was the price of the drinks and the obligatory service charge which was unexpected. Two alcoholic drinks and one coffee came to £32.00 as a result, which came as a bit of a shock when booking out.

We stayed in a medium sized room, which was generous in space, nicely decorated & spotlessly clean but it lacked a comfortable chair, the only place to sit was on the bed or a hard chair at the dressing table. That said the lounges were very comfortable but sometimes that’s not where you want to sit.
Whilst most of the staff were polite & pleasant, one or two were definitely not & didn’t manage a reply to a good morning at breakfast. We didn’t eat any meals there other than breakfast which, were very good.
We also thought that the William Cecil signage is poor as is area you enter by.

We also appreciated the discounted tickets to Burghley House & Gardens which was amazing on a lovely bright, sunny day. We walked there & back from the hotel enjoying the fabulous park and views.

The room was termed as "cosy", it was in fact confined. Just stating the area of a room is not sufficient when the ensuite is very challenged in terms of accessibility even for able bodied people. A small triangular shower cubicle with an overhead shower head the size of a dinner plate is not manageable, the sink is squeezed in next to it into a corner and to add to the inconvenience the towel rail is up against that too! You cannot stand close enough to sink to brush your teeth effectively let alone attempt a shave. The 12" square mirror above does little to help either.

The room was spacious, with good lighting and amenities. Plenty of choice of tea and coffee, and a fridge with milk in it. Excellent walk-in shower. No view though, which was disappointing. Dinner was a very limited menu and my dish was edible but a little strange. I was surprised when booking you had to book one day at a time; this is not normal on Travelzoo. Payment was made to a third party name I did not recognise. Could be clearer and 3 amounts taken not a total.. We had a front first floor room looking straight onto road. All windows were plain glass including bathroom; I expect the building is listed, but net curtains or one way screen film on windows would be good. (window film is only about £20 a pain and only lower pains needed doing.

Visiting the area so ideal for an overnight stop. Easy to find, easy to park and close to town, so could walk there easily.

Only had breakfast which was very good and as a vegetarian was nice to have several choices. Lovely to have real milk in the room. Two very minor suggestions- some instant coffee sachets in the room and being on the short side I was unable to see myself in the bathroom mirror above the sink.

We had an extremely relaxing break at The William Cecil to celebrate my husband’s birthday. As the hotel was busy we could only book what was described as a cosy room but it was very well equipped and beautifully decorated. We ate both breakfast and dinner and felt the standard of food was excellent. There was also a very comfortable sitting room - perfect for pre dinner drinks.

Really good location. The food was reasonably good although the bacon at breakfast rather resembled cardboard and had obviously been cooked some hours earlier! The weather had turned cold but there was no form of heating in the room whatsoever......so damp towels!

We felt the hotel thought itself as more 'upmarket' than it actually was. We have stayed in a vast number of hotels and felt that this one would not be rated at the top end. We were really pleased that Travelzoo advertised the William Cecil as it's always good to try somewhere new.

Lovely hotel but room 8 is lacking in some practical essentials. This room overlooks the main road and so was very noisy although there was some form of extra windows, they did not keep out the noise. No frosted glass in the bathroom window. No hook in the bathroom for hanging anything. No area for toiletries at all. No hand towel rail/hook. No shelves in bedroom so apart from tiny bedside locker, no where to put clothes. No signage in hotel for bedrooms or reception.

The hotel was very clean and tidy. The staff were friendly and professional.
The breakfast was excellent with good choice. Although dinner was overpriced for what was served.
A few minor points: Blinds did not keep light out, place to hang clothing was not fit for purpose and would've liked a hand held shower along with the large rain head.

Booking process was simple and the hotel was easy to locate. Room was small (which was expected as I had booked a cosy) but I wasn’t expecting to be right on the high street at ground floor level. The room was secondary glazed so noise was at a minimum, but it meant on a warm night we could not have the window open. The provided fan was welcome, but too noisy to have on through the night. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean with nice touches such as the Roberts radio and Nespresso machine.
We booked the Burghley break but didn’t dine at the hotel due to the fairly restricted fixed menu that had nothing on it that my husband would eat. The breakfast was excellent as were the drinks from the bar.

They gave us a room at the back which overlooked the flat roof and it contained the air conditioning units. It was very noisy and next door along from us led the way to this roof and people were crossing it day and night, they have full view of us in our room and the large window in our room gives direct access to our room. Also it was baking hot and we didn't get any air conditioning, obviously £160 per night wasn't enough for this luxury. Also the set menu was the worst I've never seen. Choice of either one of these. Vegetarian. Vegan or Omelette only one option so three dishes to choose from only. I think they do it purposely so that you prefer to look at the proper menu and spend more money. Sea trout with baby gem potatoes and a green tomato cut into four and warmed £23! Who you kidding here? Potatoes £1 a bag in shop. My husband had the steak, it came with small portion of fries and a third of the plate full of cress! £28 . Breakfast if you wanted something cooked it was £14.50 no matter whether poached egg on toast or full English even porridge 14.50 your choice. No iron been I'm budget hotels and they had an iron.

The town of Stamford is beautiful really worth a visit lots to see, shops & restaurants, Burghley House & Gardens are amazing so an added bonus. The William Cecil good location close to railway station & high street, the hotel is slightly tired inside so needs a bit of a refurbishment, we had a middle size room which was quite large but unfortunately it was at the front of the hotel so windows were on the High Street which is a very busy road until well into the night, we were even woken up at 1am by a very noisy vehicle and then again at 7am, we had asked for earplugs but the hotel didn’t have any, so would recommend but ask for a room at the back or take good earplugs! Millet’s brasserie was ok, food reasonable but service slow & poor

We paid extra for a larger room. The room was large but it was in the roof space and was too hot. The window was wide open all the time but the room was like walking into an oven. It was accessed by a very narrow winding staircase which would have been difficult for less agile guests to use.
Other Comments
The waiting staff seemed to be confused about allowances for dinner on the first night. Overall the food was good apart from one breakfast which was meant to be brioche with streaky bacon and maple syrup. The bacon was undercooked and mostly fat and the brioche was soggy and there was very little maple syrup. We were charged a mysterious extra £9 on our final bill which was explained away by service charge
