Commanding sweeping views of Fowey's river estuary and harbour, this deluxe family-friendly hotel on the Cornish coast was reputedly the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.

Facilities at Fowey Hall include a 12-metre indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor hot tub and a spa offering a range of pampering treatments. You can wander through the gardens and take in the sea views, or head to one of the nearby beaches for a stroll. There are excellent services for families at this hotel, including a crèche (£16 for two hours), a games room and a DVD library.

The restaurant serves hearty Cornish fare made using seasonal, local ingredients, so expect a menu filled with fresh seafood. The breakfast spread includes a buffet of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries and muffins. While there is no bar, the Snug proves a lovely spot for an aperitif.

Standard Double Rooms are in the main house: they are classic in style and ideal for couples. The 12 rooms in the Garden Wing are connected to the main house and all have garden and estuary views. Rooms in the courtyard are a minute's walk from the main house. Dogs are allowed in some rooms for £15 a night -- let the hotel know in advance if you plan on bringing your pet.

We have also negotiated a spa day with cream tea for £49 per person, saving 47% on the regular rates.

Beware! Multiple overcharging issues in the restaurant plus ordered a particular drink and one twice the price was charged for. Noisy family rooms with door banging and clear conversations from neighbouring rooms. Swimming pool lovely. Nice open fires. Reception staff friendly

It was a very pleasant break marred only by a poor experience by the waitress at dinner. We were given a very limited menu (the sum of the individual items most certainly did not add up to the allowance advertised) where there was only one meat dish "chicken chaseure" and when queried the facts that we were on an offer with a food allowance, was told that this was the menu for a half board package. She advised we could order from the a la Carte menu but we would have to pay. By this time we had already surrendered our voucher so could not refer to it. We had to be quite insistent that we wanted the a la Carte menu and she then said we would have to take the charges up with Reception. This left an uncomfortable feeling as we didn't know if we'd have an argument on our hands when we got the bill at check-out. As it happened, it was fine and the bill showed only the items above the allowance but this isn't the point as the damage had been done.

We requested twin beds but were not made aware that the beds were only 2’6”” wide which is far too small for an adult. Therefore we did not have a good nights rest. The dinner menu was more bistro than “Luxury Hotel” which the hotel states it is.

We have been to this hotel a few times and always love it! However, this time things were not as nice, apart from the staff who are always lovely. We were disappointed with the dinner menu and our beds as mentioned . However, the breakfast was excellent with a lot of choice and freshly cooked to order. The hotel is having a make over in the New Year. We are interested to check this out before we book again. Guests should be told the twin beds are only 2’6” wide.

Overall Fowey hall was lovely a nice old country house with open fires. Though I would say if it was not Sunday evening to Monday there would have been more children than we would have liked around. They seem to be catering for families more so if you are a couple,e wanting a nice time away without to many children this is not the place. The staff were lovely and room although a little tired and not keen on a hand shower was still lovely with fab views. The spa and pool were lovely. Again though we were lucky only 3 of us in there and if more than about 6 would have been Dodging each other as a small pool. Sadly the dinner was only okay my other half had steak which you had one choice of a veg or potatoe fries with and the sauce was not very flavoursome. The steak came out on its own no onion rings ,tomatoes, mushrooms very strange and my fish curry was nice but again the rice was a let down totally overcooked and mushy. The staff did offer something else or replacement but a good chef would not have sent it out like that maybe just having a bad day. The breakfast was better and had a nice lot of choices and tasty. Not any entertainment at all so if you don,t want a quiet evening not for you.

Have been several times before and thoroughly enjoyed our stays. My husband's health deteriorated and his mobility is affected...we asked do a non slip mat for the bath/shower...and were told they would try and source one....however this was not forthcoming.. The evening menu was limited in choice...with 4 variations of the same thing (Curries) two of our main meals (Thai beef curry)were sent back and I gather that two other tables sent their aback also... .so very disappointed with the main meals

Have always had excellent meals at the hotel, but bitterly disappointed with the main meals on menu on this occasion....had we been paying the full hotel prices...I would think twice about going back...However we could not fault the staff, who did their best. I would recommend the hotel but not the menu on this occasion....and would want to see a menu before I booked again...

Fantastic trip back in time to old world charm and good service. Made us feel really special

While the excellent food justified a top price there was no average priced wine to choose from the menu. Sometimes wine is not so important and you just want something to sip without a painful bill attached.
