Commanding sweeping views of Fowey's river estuary and harbour, this deluxe family-friendly hotel on the Cornish coast was reputedly the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.

Facilities at Fowey Hall include a 12-metre indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor hot tub and a spa offering a range of pampering treatments. You can wander through the gardens and take in the sea views, or head to one of the nearby beaches for a stroll. There are excellent services for families at this hotel, including a crèche (£13 for two hours), a games room and a DVD library.

The restaurant serves hearty Cornish fare made using seasonal, local ingredients, so expect a menu filled with fresh seafood. The breakfast spread includes a buffet of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries and muffins. While there is no bar, the Snug proves a lovely spot for an aperitif.

Standard Double Rooms are located in the main house: they are classic in style and ideal for couples. The 12 rooms in the Garden Wing are connected to the main house and all have garden and estuary views. Rooms in the courtyard are a minute's walk from the main house. Dogs are allowed in some rooms for £15 a night -- let the hotel know in advance if you plan on bringing your pet.

We had an amazing stay, the only thing that really spoilt it was that I had booked it as a romantic surprise for my partner. On the phone I was told there was no need to book a table in the restaurant as it wouldn't be busy. On the night however we were seated in a cold, unatmospheric side room with another couple. When I asked why we weren't in the (candle lit romantic) dining room I was told it was 'fully booked'. Very disappointing. It did ruin the evening.

The Spa, which was clean and a relaxing experience.

Fowey Hall is a magnificent old building, with several lounges to relax in. Though there was heaps of character the hotel is definitely a little tired looking. The room we had was quite shabby and in need of a complete overhaul. Staff were very friendly and helpful, making our stay comfortable. However I do feel that the hotel was understaffed and things were a but disorganised.

we loved the hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful. the décor in the hotel was really nice and luxurious, log fires and lovely comfortable sofas and armchairs. the food was excellent lovely dining room. our room was excellent with a sea view wonderful bathroom very very clean.

although the food was excellent I was a little disappointed about the menu. we stayed 3 nights and they only had 2 different menus alternating them each night, that would be ok if this was a large menu but there was not very much to choose from if you were staying for a week. also the outside jacuzzi needed to be a bit warmer, other guests were complaining that it was too cold. the staff were informed but it didn't seem to get any warmer. but having said that I would certainly return for another visit.
