Commanding sweeping views of Fowey's river estuary and harbour, this deluxe family-friendly hotel on the Cornish coast was reputedly the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.

Facilities at Fowey Hall include a 12-metre indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor hot tub and a spa offering a range of pampering treatments. You can wander through the gardens and take in the sea views, or head to one of the nearby beaches for a stroll. There are excellent services for families at this hotel, including a crèche (£16 for two hours), a games room and a DVD library.

The restaurant serves hearty Cornish fare made using seasonal, local ingredients, so expect a menu filled with fresh seafood. The breakfast spread includes a buffet of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries and muffins. While there is no bar, the Snug proves a lovely spot for an aperitif.

Standard Double Rooms are in the main house: they are classic in style and ideal for couples. The 12 rooms in the Garden Wing are connected to the main house and all have garden and estuary views. Rooms in the courtyard are a minute's walk from the main house. Dogs are allowed in some rooms for £15 a night -- let the hotel know in advance if you plan on bringing your pet.

We have also negotiated a spa day with cream tea for £49 per person, saving 47% on the regular rates.

Fantastic trip back in time to old world charm and good service. Made us feel really special

While the excellent food justified a top price there was no average priced wine to choose from the menu. Sometimes wine is not so important and you just want something to sip without a painful bill attached.

A wonderfully relaxing stay, with lots of great walks nearby and a lovely log fire to warm up to. The food was great and the staff were all really lovely too. They're doing some refurbishments over the winter so no doubt it will be even better.

Previous visits to the hotel (this was our 4th), we found the staff excellent. Very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. This time was quite the opposite. No real fires. We had to ask twice to get one started. First answer was we cant. There was a family hotel management meeting there whilst we were there which seemed to take priority over us as paying guests. Food was just "ok" this time. All previous times it had been excellent. Left disappointed and that prices had gone up. It quality of service has gone down. Last visit for us which is a shame.
