Why We Love It

  • Condé Nast Traveller calls the hotel a "superbly luxurious seaside pile"
  • This deluxe family-friendly hotel has a 12-metre indoor pool, a spa and a hot tub with uninterrupted sea views
  • Fowey Hall is said to have been the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows

Overview

Commanding sweeping views of Fowey's river estuary and harbour, this deluxe family-friendly hotel on the Cornish coast was reputedly the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.

Facilities at Fowey Hall include a 12-metre indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor hot tub and a spa offering a range of pampering treatments. You can wander through the gardens and take in the sea views, or head to one of the nearby beaches for a stroll. There are excellent services for families at this hotel, including a crèche (£13 for two hours), a games room and a DVD library.

The restaurant serves hearty Cornish fare made using seasonal, local ingredients, so expect a menu filled with fresh seafood. The breakfast spread includes a buffet of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries and muffins. While there is no bar, the Snug proves a lovely spot for an aperitif.

Standard Double Rooms are located in the main house: they are classic in style and ideal for couples. The 12 rooms in the Garden Wing are connected to the main house and all have garden and estuary views. Rooms in the courtyard are a minute's walk from the main house. Dogs are allowed in some rooms for £15 a night -- let the hotel know in advance if you plan on bringing your pet.

We've also negotiated a spa day including a cream tea for £49.

The pool and hot tub were enjoyable. The staff were very pleasant and all looked good and gave excellent customer service. The log fires were very welcoming.
Other Comments
We expected to stay in the hall. Our room was in the grounds so we were a bit disappointed. The room was a good size and included a settee and there was a very spacious bathroom with fluffy white towels. There were chairs and a table on the balcony. The hall is very comfortable and furnished in an old fashioned country house style. We were surprised that a 10% gratuity for the staff had automatically been added to the bill. (Mention of this was made on the menu). This should be discretionary. We objected to the charge as we had paid for a travel zoo offer which included dinner and the gratuity was removed without quibble. The charges for drinks were high ie £7 approx for the cheapest glass of wine or beer plus 10%. We think that the TZ offer should have made clear that the rooms might not be in the Hall and that a 10% gratuity would be on the bill but was optional. How do we know that it would go to the staff?
