Why We Love This Hotel

  • With its hallucinatory and mythological design, The Mandrake offers a contemporary boutique experience. According to Condé Nast Traveller, its public areas "have the intricacy of a souk, of courtyards and half-glimpsed spaces".
  • Jurema, The Mandrake's interior terrace, overlooks the courtyard and is surrounded by jasmine and passionflower that hangs down from the floor above. There's also a glasshouse full of exotic medicinal plants.
  • As part of The Mandrake's focus on spiritual wellbeing, there are complimentary slow yoga sessions and guided meditation for guests on Saturday and Sunday mornings. A menu of healing sessions, sound baths, massages, and yoga sessions is available (supplements apply).
  • The Mandrake's location is perfect for exploring the capital—it's around five minutes' walk from Tottenham Court Road Tube station and just a couple of minutes away from Oxford Street.
  • Some of London's coolest neighbourhoods are on the doorstep: it's in Fitzrovia, which has culinary hotspot Charlotte Street at its heart, and Soho (the city's premier nightlife destination) and Bloomsbury, famous for its literary history, are a short walk away.
  • The hotel features curated playlists and DJs, as well as live performances by musicians on Thursday-Saturday evenings starting from 9pm. There is also an artist in residence programme, spotlighting work by a diverse roster of creators.

Note: dress codes apply at The Mandrake's bars and restaurants. See the hotel's website for details.

The hotel is like no other we have stayed in. When we first arrived, we were impressed by the room, which was a reasonable size and the general quirkiness of the decor and also it had a lovely open central area, which was like a living garden. We booked to eat in the restaurant, not realising it was tapas. The food was ok, but not worth the hefty price tag. The restaurant was interesting, but dark and a bit like something from the Adams family. We went to the bar for a drink after and the clientele were fairly young. There was loud music and a D J which went on until the early hours, so if like us you prefer to get to sleep before 1am, I suggest you book elsewhere.

Nice room. Good breakfast. Friendly staff. But...the vibe did not feel quite right and at times we both felt a little uneasy esp. in the evening when there was a 'party' on and there was a definite vibe of some extra cirricular activity going on. I'm no prude trust me, but even I felt uneasy! What can I say, was not quite what we expected.
