Why We Love This Hotel

  • The Park Head hotel is part of The Auckland Project, a charity that aims to revitalize the historic mining town of Bishop Auckland. Other local attractions that are part of the regeneration are Auckland Castle, Spanish Gallery, Auckland Tower, Walled Garden, and more.
  • The hotel's restaurant uses fresh produce, grown in the castle gardens or locally sourced from across the county.
  • The historic Durham city—home to an 11th-century cathedral and a Norman castle—is 20 minutes' drive away.
  • The open-air Beamish Museum, the Bowes Museum, and the Durham Heritage Coast are all within a 30-minute drive of the hotel.
  • The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. It has a distinct landscape and serves as a key habitat for a variety of flora and fauna.
  • County Durham, with a variety of walking routes for all abilities, is a "landscape best explored on foot" (National Geographic). The best known route is the 77-mile Weardale Way that follows the path of the River Wear.

Very welcoming and helpful staff, excellent refurbishments, clean and everything we needed. We ate both nights in the restaurant which was very good. Good to support the regeneration project and we enjoyed visiting Bishop Auckland - surprised at how much there is to do!
Other Comments
Whilst our room was absolutely fine, unfortunately it was directly above the plant room which we found quite noisy at night. Would recommend other users to request avoiding that one! (Room 27). To be fair, the hotel offered a different room on the second night but as we were settled into the room we decided to stick with it. Our friends in other rooms were very happy.

Beautifully refurbished hotel well positioned for exploring the many Auckland Project attractions. Very friendly receptionist and breakfast staff., though evening waiting staff could do with more training and direction. Dinner menu limited but what we had was good. Would have liked to try their Spanish house wine but they had run out, no alternative suggested. Atmosphere would have been better if it had been busier.
Other Comments
On a very busy road so noisy despite good double glazing. We were in the main hotel - the annexe rooms would be much quieter.

We stayed in a very spacious twin bedded room, which was beautifully decorated, modern and well planned. All the decor throughout the hotel was new, as it was only reopened in February. There was a good choice for breakfast - would recommend the pancakes with fruit compote. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite.

Breakfasts and evening menu need some work but that is all. The staff were friendly & helpful. Location is ideal for visiting Durham & surrounding area.
