Why We Love This Hotel

  • The Park Head hotel is part of The Auckland Project, a charity that aims to revitalize the historic mining town of Bishop Auckland.
  • The attractions within the project recount the town's rich history. Dating back almost 1000 years, Auckland Castle was once the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham, while the Spanish Gallery celebrates the art, history, and culture of the Spanish Golden Age.
  • The hotel's Oak Room restaurant features a vivid colour palate and uses fresh produce grown in the castle gardens or locally sourced from across the county.
  • The hotel's guests can receive discounted entry to Raby Castle and the open-air Beamish Museum (enquire at reception for details).
  • The historic Durham city—home to an 11th-century cathedral and a Norman castle—is 20 minutes' drive away.

Great food, great breakfast. Rooms are clean and fresh. Bed quilt is a little too heavy and rooms were a little warm, but just slight niggles on an otherwise great stay

We had a beautiful room with a comfy king-sized bed. Courtyard room was spotless with views across the fields . Loved the chairs in the room - bright orange. Hearty breakfast with plenty of choice. Evening meals exceptional - great service. Bishop Auckland only a short drive away and shops just up the road for getting anything . Can highly recommend.
Other Comments
The food was 5 star and the waitress came asking us if we were happy with everything. We have never had food as good .The second night was not as good - change of waitress. Not happy at all. It was as if we were doing her a favour being there. Breakfast staff lovely and helpful.
