Nestled in nine acres of landscaped gardens, Sudbury House Hotel sits on the edge of the historic market town of Faringdon in Oxfordshire's Vale of the White Horse, between the Cotswolds and the North Wessex Downs
The hotel's Magnolia Restaurant creates seasonal British dishes made using locally sourced ingredients. It features a theatre kitchen with a wood-burning oven, and there's also a terrace for al fresco dining in good weather
Faringdon Woodlands are five minutes' walk away. The 4-acre woods contain a sculpture trail with animal figures, wooden canons, a hidden fairy door, and the imposing 100-foot-tall Folly Tower
The Medieval city of Oxford — famed for its college quads, historic pubs, and characterful passages and alleyways — is 30 minutes' drive away. Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, is 35 minutes' drive away
The pretty Cotswolds town of Burford is 20 minutes' drive away. Its gently sloping high street has sweeping views of the rolling countryside, and is lined with half-timbered Tudor houses. There are also plenty of antique shops, old pubs, and tea rooms to explore
You could sample traditional afternoon tea in the lounge after a morning's sightseeing (supplements apply)

Beautiful hotel, magnificent gardens, comfortable room but lacks soul. We stayed two nights and the room was not serviced. There is not one piece of hotel information in the room, not even a hooked card on the back of the door to say do not disturb. First evening I was served tepid tomato and red pepper soup. The rest of the meal was good however. But the following morning the bacon was barely cooked, the sausages cold, the beans, mushrooms and tomatoes warmish. The fried or scrambled eggs had seen better days and obviously been waiting a long time. On the website it states that lunch is served on a Monday from 12 to 2.30 but lunch was not available and there is no such thing as room service.

A very good hotel with friendly & helpful staff. The gardens were well kept and and well designed, with small clipped hedging & pleached trees.
Breakfast was good, with lots of choice for the guests.

The hotel is in a good location for guests who are visiting the area. Faringdon itself, is an old market town with some good bars and eating places. Buscot Park is well worth a visit.

3 nights bed breakfast & evening meal. Room was pleasant but didn’t have a nice view. Bed was very comfortable but pillows appalling. Shower was abysmal! Plenty of tea, coffee, milk provided. Very nice location. Food varied from excellent to not very good. Very quiet as less than half full.

Adding other drinks to the wine list in the restaurant would be useful as the staffs knowledge of what is a beer or cider was limited.

The hotel is good, but it is a shame that they think it necessary to add 10% to all restaurant bills.

I couldn't find any outside poo bins for my pooch but that could well have been I hadn't seen any!
This is a lovely quiet hotel with a lot going for it and staff very willing to help and assist. Food was excellent. We would return if we were in the area again but tend not to visit any place more than once not matter how good so this is no reflection on the hotel at all.

Brief but enjoyable stay. Sadly there was no-one except ourselves in the Magnolia Restaurant on our first night, but our meal was excellent and our waitress very pleasant and helpful. Breakfasts good, prepared to order, never felt rushed.

We had a lovely stay with friendly staff throughout. The bar area was very quite but prices for drinks alittle steep especially when plenty of bars in the town which is 5-10 minutes walk. Resteraunt where we had evening meal and breakfast had a nice quite atmosphere with fabulous food and service. Good location plenty of parking which some is on a slight hill but still fine as other parking below. Bedrooms had everything you need from tea/coffee facilities, iron and board, table with 2 chairs (this is a big must as some hotels only supply 1 chair when it is for 2 people plus dressing table with extra chair, bathroom accessories and we had a lovely view of the greenery and garden. Overall we had a lovely stay and would definitely return.

This is a lovely hotel - good quality but not pretentious. The check in was quick and friendly, the room was well equipped and spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. The quality of the food was excellent and every member of staff was delightful. I will most certainly visit again.

The staff were very nice from the reception to waiters and waitresses with the exception of an English waitress on our second evening meal who was unfriendly and slapdash. The South African waitress (first evening) was the polar opposite, and the Ukranian waitress at breakfast was delightful

A friendly reception and easy check in. Our room clean and pleasant. It was lovey and quiet, away from the road with a nice view of the lovely grounds at the back. The restaurant lacked atmosphere and sparsely furnished but the food made up for that. A good varied menu and we really enjoyed our dinner. Good service and wine list.
Other Comments
We would like to compliment the chef in particular. His experience in Europe and US was apparent and the dishes were very well executed and presented, though not fussy or too complex. Just delicious and generous portions. Very enjoyable meal, up to a high standard and definitely recommended.

We wanted a quiet weekend away and this hotel did not disappoint. However, the town seemed very quiet for a Saturday afternoon/evening. The hotel itself was very nice, though we were surprised at the lack of storage space for clothes. No drawers?! Hanging only. Room and bathroom clean and comfortable. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Restaurant quite quiet and a bit lacking in atmosphere.

Sudbury House is really good at the hospitality business obviously taking great care in training their staff. We were extremely well looked after by a member of reception staff who doubled up serving us in the comfy bar. Also by "Exempt" (that's what it said on her lanyard !!) in the restaurant for our evening meal and the following day breakfast. Thank you Sudbury House.

We enjoyed a great stay.
The hotel is clean and the rooms quiet for a good night's sleep. I read in other online reviews ahead of our stay that guests had not been happy with the low water pressure to shower. We were completely happy with the water pressure and certainly couldn't fault it unless it was just as the hotel was quieter and/or we were showering during quieter times...
The not so good aspects from our perfective were namely:
- Needing to a table before arrival for dinner and to book for breakfast upon arrival. Check-in is not until 1400 and so when we arrived there were then no later breakfast seatings available and so we had to be up early just for breakfast. I am unsure if it is related to COVID and staff shortages, but when we did dine at dinner and breakfast the restaurant was pretty empty anyway and it certainly didn't appear that tables were anywhere close to being fully taken.
- A pint of beer at the bar costs £6 and so certainly not cheap and given there isn't much surrounding the hotel to have any other option/s of anywhere else to eat or drink within walking distance
- However, by far the biggest disadvantages of the hotel are the size of a standard room as once you also have a cot in the room too there's not much space left and that there isn't a fridge provided at all - you only get a kettle in the room for tea/coffee making.
It's not ideal, but the only saving grace was that Reception were very helpful in allowing the use of their fridge if you advise when you need an item from it.
Despite some downsides, we would still be happy to stay again and so really they weren't insurmountable.
