Both the seaside and the southern Lakes are within easy reach of the Grange Hotel, a "splendid" resort-style property with bags of "charm and confidence" (The Daily Telegraph). Set on a hillside above the bay and the genteel town of Grange-over-Sands, the hotel occupies an imposing Italianate building dating from the Victorian era, clad in creepers and surrounded by woodland and lawns.

The town centre, with its mile-long promenade, myriad shops, tea rooms and ornamental gardens complete with duck pond, is a 10-minute walk away.

The hotel is on the southern fringe of the Lake District, five miles from Lake Windermere, with some splendid walking routes right on the doorstep. Nearby Cartmel, famous for its sticky toffee pudding, is well worth a visit -- it has a 12th-century priory, interesting shops and cosy pubs, and is around five minutes' away by car.

The tranquility of Coniston Water is a 25-minute drive away, while the traditional seaside town of Morecambe takes around 40 minutes to reach by car. For a spot of history, Sizergh Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall stately homes are all within a 15-minute drive of the hotel.

Interiors are grand and spacious, with high ceilings, richly patterned fabrics, and gilded armchairs and mirrors. There's an elegant candle-lit restaurant for fine dining, and a lounge bar with a fireplace serving casual fare, along with sitting rooms stocked with books and games, and a garden terrace dotted with wrought-iron tables and chairs. Guests can also relax in the leisure club, which offers an indoor pool, a sauna, a steam room and a gym, as well as a range of beauty treatments (fees may apply).

Guestrooms at the Grange pick up the hotel's traditional style, with canopied beds, lavish drapes and marble-topped tables, and feature free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Higher-tariff rooms have countryside views, as well as chaises longues, separate sitting areas and bay views. A range of opulent suites include touches such as 4-poster beds, roll-top baths and balconies.

Thank you for the e mail inviting feedback following our recent stay at Grange Hotel. As the initial question is did we enjoy our experience there, it would be very unfair to the hotel to give the honest answer which is “not really”. We arrived on the 21st March and, totally understandably, following government instructions regarding Covid 19 we had a completely unexpected experience. On checking in, we were told we had to eat our pre-booked 3 course meal in our room, we had to pre-order breakfast for the next day and eat that in our room, the bar was closed but if we ordered a drink through reception they would bring that to our room and the gym, leisure and spa facilities were closed. We were informed all of this out of the blue but we understand all this completely. We were told, because we booked through Travelzoo, they could not pre warn us because they did not have our e mail address. We took that to mean it was our fault for not booking directly with them and for using yourselves. We were advised next morning that Travelzoo cannot provide our e mail address to them because of data protection laws. Perhaps due to the fast moving situation they could have contacted you and asked you to contact us? On checking out next morning we mentioned to reception that we may contact you with a suggestion which, respectfully, is ( and we have no idea how feasible this would be) when booking - could you look at introducing a question along the lines of “may be provide your e mail address to the hotel?”. A customer could then choose yes or no. We knew the situation was getting worse in the previous 24hours and had been looking at our e mails every half hour but who knows what other unforeseen circumstances could arise in the future. We were within striking distance of home, having been away for very special birthday celebrations and could have easily come home, walked through our own door and sat in our own abode on our own eating in isolation. Are we cheesed off at paying £159 to check in, not be allowed to go anywhere but our room and stay there until we checked out? Yes we are. Are we cheesed off that perhaps, considering the unprecedented circumstances, we could have been given the option of visiting another time when we would have spent money in the bar and enjoyed the facilities we had paid for and more than likely come away with a lovely impression of the hotel? Yes we are. We did have the feeling that they really didn’t want us there and, really, honestly, we absolutely did not want to be there in that situation. A part of the deal was also (from memory) a cream tea, palette cleansers, coffee, which was never mentioned to us and we couldn’t even be bothered to raise it with the staff there as we thought if they were bothered then they would have mentioned it. Also, in the morning the tray which was delivered had spilt fruit juice and no milk. Understandably, we think they were struggling to deal with the problem. However, all of this has completely made us form the opinion that we would not recommend this hotel, the only positive is that the evening meal was delicious. Thank you for taking the time to read this feedback and, if you did think it reasonable to look into our suggestion of asking if you could provide contact details in the future, then we would be very happy. We assure you, we know how serious the Coronavirus situation is - we are not stupid - but a little understanding of how we felt would have been nice. Travelzoo need to be aware that hotels in the scheme should not make customers feel like 2nd class citizens.
