Hotel Hospes Puerta de Alcalá
About the Hotel
Why We Love This Hotel
The Hotel Hospes Puerta de Alcalá is a boutique 5-star retreat in Madrid's posh Salamanca district. The Daily Telegraph calls this "glamorous" hideaway "the perfect haven for relaxing after exploring the city". The hotel is set in a grand 19th-century townhouse building right opposite the impressive Puerta de Alcalá monument and Retiro Park, which is famous for its expansive gardens and gorgeous lake, where you can hire rowing boats.
The hotel has a restaurant that specialises in Spanish tapas, fine dining and cocktails, and a luxurious spa with a Jacuzzi pool. Deluxe Rooms feature a king-size bed, a rainfall shower, a pillow menu and bathrobes and slippers. Spa access and Wi-Fi are included in the price.
You'll be around a 20-minute walk from the Puerta del Sol square, the Plaza Mayor -- a large public space surrounded on all sides by 17th-century buildings -- and the Gran Vía shopping and entertainment street. Madrid Cathedral and Royal Palace (arrive early to beat the queues) are a 30-minute walk or short Metro ride away. Madrid's three art museums -- the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza -- are all less than 20 minutes' walk away. The Prado, where you can see masterpieces by Goya, Titian, Rembrandt and Raphael, is free after 6pm Monday-Saturday and 5pm on Sunday.
