TOP 20 - Sells out quickly!

  • Accommodation in a Lake View or Cottage Room, with full Cumbrian breakfast, for two
  • A 3-course set-menu dinner at the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant with canapés and amuse-bouche (worth £47 per person)
  • Extra nights with breakfast and dinner in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant are same price

Why We Love It

  • The property is described as "opulent luxury in a stunning lakeside setting" (The AA)
  • The restaurant holds two AA Rosettes
  • Stock Ghyll Force waterfall in Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away and Wray Castle is 20 minutes' drive away
  • Castlerigg Stone Circle is a 40-minute drive away, while Hardknott Roman Fort is a 50-minute drive away

Miller Howe has a "stunning" (The AA) setting overlooking Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park. The region, which Lonely Planet praises it for its "craggy hilltops, mountain tarns and glittering lakes", is awash with outdoor activities, from lake cruises to mountain walks, and it is also renowned for its literary connections, including William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Beatrix Potter.

Stock Ghyll Force waterfall in Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away and Wray Castle, a mock-Gothic castle on the shores of Lake Windermere with turrets, towers and grounds to explore, is 20 minutes' drive away.

Predator Experience, where you can see birds of prey, try falconry and walk with wolves, is less than 25 minutes' drive away. Castlerigg Stone Circle, a Neolothic stone circle with views of Helvellyn and Skiddaw, is a 40-minute drive away.

The remote Hardknott Roman Fort is a 50-minute drive away. Built in the second century, it is now an archeological site containing the remains of the Roman fort Mediobogdum.

The restaurant, which has been awarded two AA Rosettes, creates "imaginative dinners" using "fresh, local produce where possible" (The AA).

Wi-Fi is free. Most rooms have balconies with views of Windermere towards the Langdale Pikes.

Dogs can stay for £10 per dog, per night (maximum two dogs per room).

Superb location with fabulous views over the lake towards the mountains (although our extremely comfortable "cottage" room had a restricted view because of trees in full leaf). Put these together with a great menu with really interesting dishes (with not a soggy chip in sight), and lovely helpful staff, and you have the ideal place for a most enjoyable break.

Miller Howe is a wonderful hotel that feels like someones home, which it was once was. If you love the 'arts and craft' movement from the early 1900's then you will appreciate this hotel. We love the style of the building/fireplaces/furniture, wooden floors and the smell of furniture polish. Its cosy and intimate and no one invades your space. The food is amazing and Miller Howe has its own farm/vegetable garden so much is self sourced and as non meat eaters we can appreciate the taste of home grown veggies...mmm yum, yum!. We took advantage of a TravelZoo deal which included overnight stay with 3 course meal, amuse bouche & canapes. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and it was great value for money. One small detail. We thought the Veggie cooked breakfast could be improved - very, very tasty but just a tad small at the moment so an extra mushroom/tomato and egg please would be appreciated. Despite that we had a wonderful stay and will definitely be returning.

We are a touch bias about Miller Howe as we had our wedding there this time last year. A magical day which far exceeded our expectations and was enjoyed by all our guests but rest assured I would not be writing a review if the hotel did not warrant . Its a real Lake land treat that we would prefer to keep to ourselves!!!
