Why We Love It

  • This hotel -- which cost £50 million to build -- opened in March 2017
  • You’ll be within 25 minutes' walk of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, the King's College Chapel and the Fitzwilliam Museum
  • Tamburlaine is named after a 16th-century play written by Christopher Marlowe, who once studied in the city
  • July and August dates are now available

Cambridge's newest hotel, Tamburlaine, opened last month. This £50 million property has caused quite the stir -- with The Daily Telegraph claiming it "represents a remarkable step forward" for the city's hotel scene, describing it as the "most exciting opening in years".

Tamburlaine is next to Cambridge railway station; most of the city's attractions, including the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, the King's College Chapel, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Trinity College, can be reached within 25 minutes by foot.

The hotel is named after "Tamburlaine the Great" -- a 16th-century play written by Christopher Marlowe, who studied at the city's Corpus Christi Catholic College. The play is set in central Asia and the hotel's owners have used the Asian link to influence some of the décor. The Times notes the "geometric patterns on carpets, neat hexagonal tiles in the lobby, and fine bone china with Middle Eastern designs".

There are 155 bedrooms, a lobby with modern chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and a library, which, according to The Daily Telegraph, has a "cosy atmosphere… induced by sagging bookshelves, panelled walls and snug furniture". There's also a brasserie restaurant, a cocktail bar, a deli and a colonial-style garden room where guests can enjoy cream tea.

From the press:

  • "Cambridge has a stylish and comfortable new bolt hole run by friendly staff" -- The Times

  • "The Tamburlaine represents a remarkable step forward for a city that, otherwise, has a remarkable dearth of decent accommodation options" -- The Daily Telegraph

The restaurant day manager on Saturday was a bit aggressive towards staff. The manner she spoke to staff wasn't pleasant to be around.

just to note, the car parking at the station which is where the hotel suggests you to park was shut due to work being done at the station at the weekend. We were directed to park at the Leisure Park which is about a 10 minute walk. if you can park at the Travelodge site which is by the Leisure Park costs for £12 to park for 24 hours, the Leisure Park is considerably more. Also if you are disabled it would be difficult. They said there may be further work at the station on weekends so I would suggest checking with the hotel before you come.

Brand new hotel. Very well appointed room. Convenient location to Cambridge station.
Other Comments
The hotel has just been opened. It is beautifully decorated throughout with a good gym. Bar and restaurant staff need a bit more attention to bring the level of their service and attentiveness to match the front of the house's level.

We had a problem with the air conditioning in our room which was not resolved. However this was hopefully just a teething trouble.
