Why We Love It

  • The 18th-century hotel is at the foot of the Pentland Hills -- ideal for ramblers
  • It's 20 minutes' drive from Edinburgh, where you can visit Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat
  • The property has 1000 acres of grounds, as well as tennis courts and an indoor pool
  • The AA praises the hotel's two 18-hole golf courses as "impressive"

Tucked away at the foot of the Pentland Hills, around 20 minutes' drive from central Edinburgh, Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club is an ideal middle ground between the country and city.

Scotland's capital is full of impressive sights. Edinburgh Castle dates from the 12th century and houses the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny. To see new architecture meeting old, head to Holyrood, where the contemporary Scottish Parliament Building and 16th-century Holyrood Palace (the home of the Queen in Scotland) sit opposite each other. Holyrood Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also where you'll find Arthur's Seat -- the remains of a 350-million-year-old extinct volcano.

There are two restaurants -- Pentland and The Brasserie -- both with views of the grounds. The Pentland serves locally sourced Scottish fare, including herbs from its own garden, while the more informal Brasserie serves grilled meats and pasta dishes.

The hotel is popular with golfers for its "impressive" facilities, which include a driving range and two 18-hole golf courses. There are also tennis courts, an indoor heated pool, a gym and a sauna.

All rooms have queen-size beds and views of the golf course or grounds. They also have Sky Sports, Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Lovely hotel with very friendly and helpful staff although we weren't impressed with the long wait for access to our rooms when we saw guests arriving more than an hour after we were told our rooms weren't ready and they were given access to their rooms. We were given complimentary tea/coffee during our wait, but no one came to give us any update after we were told initially we would only be waiting half an hour.

The staff were very helpful in the restaurant. The staff in the bar at the leisure centre could do with more training though.

On our first morning we went to the bar for coffee and scones and were told we couldn't get scones until after 12pm. Unknown to me my friend who has a mobility problem then went to enquirie at reception and was told to go to the restaurant to ask for scones only to be told we couldn't get scones until after 12pm. Firstly, this is very poor, particularly in Scottish hotel and in a large hotel of this class. Secondly, the receptionist should have made enquiries at the restaurant instead of sending a guest to do it. I made these points to the receptionist at check out and also made reference to the very loud noise in our bedroom (caused by something mechanical?). She said she would pass these comments on to the manager but one week on I've heard nothing from the hotel. We have stayed at the dalmahoy very many times in the past and this was by far our poorest visit, excaserbated by the fact that we told our friends who were visiting for the time that it was a good hotel. I'm disappointed not to have our concerns addressed.

All aspects really. Room was excellent. Food was brilliant and plentiful. Staff, without exception, were polite and helpful. Log fire in cocktail bar was homely.
