Why We Love It

  • The hotel, which was once the home of prime minister Stanley Baldwin, is set in 23 acres of "attractive grounds" (The AA)
  • There is a gym, outdoor tennis courts and a restaurant with a terrace
  • Worcester, with its 11th-century cathedral, galleries and listed buildings, is 20 minutes' drive away

The original Victorian part of this 72-room hotel was once the home of former prime minister Stanley Baldwin. It's set in 23 acres of gardens on the edge of Stourport-on-Severn -- an inland port town built in the mid-1700s where the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal meets the River Severn -- and is 15 minutes' drive from Kidderminster.

The timber-framed Tudor buildings and Georgian architecture of Worcester are 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. You can visit the 11th-century cathedral to see the royal tombs and medieval cloisters.

West Midland Safari Park -- which is home to around 600 animals and has a drive-through safari, and rides and attractions for children -- is 15 minutes' drive, as is the Wyre Forest.

This hotel has plenty of facilities to keep guests occupied. There is a leisure club with an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a poolside Jacuzzi, as well as a gym, a squash court and tennis courts.

The restaurant serves a brasserie-style menu of British classics and international cuisine. There's a terrace for al fresco dining, and a bar and lounge with a separate menu of light bites.

A few of the bedrooms are in the original Victorian house, but most are in a modern building. All rooms have free Wi-Fi. Superior doubles have additional features including separate lounge areas.

We really enjoyed our stay and the evening meal was very enjoyable. However on collecting our plates from the main course we were not offered a dessert menu and had considerable difficulty making any eye contact with the waiting staff to facilitate this.

ThIs was a Travel Zoo deal and was excellent value. The evening meal and breakfast was very good. The grounds/gardens are lovely. My husband was disappointed as they had run out of cheese board (who runs out of cheese)?

We had a couple of hiccups re: rooms. First we were allocated a disabled room, then we moved to a room with a completely cracked sink, therefore I had wet feet when cleaning my teeth. We then had to move to a third room which was a family room, not necessary as the disabled room with a wet room wasn't. Not the end of the world but when we were only staying the one night it was very tiring and rather spoilt our relaxation.
