Alexandra House is set in 20 acres of landscaped grounds within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, four miles from Swindon and half an hour's drive from the Cotswolds.

The Cotswold market town of Cirencester -- where you'll find "handsome streets of golden stone that are generously punctuated by green spaces", according to The Daily Telegraph -- is 30 minutes away by car. It has a selection of boutique shops, cafés and restaurants.

The Georgian city of Bath, and Stonehenge, are both an hour's drive away, while Highclere Castle, a country house in Jacobethan style set in parkland designed by Capability Brown -- and the filming location of "Downton Abbey" -- is a 35-minute drive away.

Avebury Stone Circle, a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, is less than 20 minutes' drive away

The 260-acre Lydiard Park is also 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. Lydiard House -- a striking Grade I-listed Palladian house -- is the beating heart of the park and is open Wednesday-Sunday from 11am-4pm.

Cotswold Water Park, an area of 40 square miles with more than 150 lakes that is ideal for walking, cycling, angling and a variety of watersports, is 25 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's Tempus Restaurant offers à la carte and set-menu dining, and the Tempus Bar serves drinks and lighter meals. All guests get free use of the health club, which has a gym, a pool, a sauna and a steam room. Hotel having carpets refitted so the place stank of glue and main hall had carpets, let into wrong room first, keys deactivate when near a phone or a wallet, asked for toilet roll as do not disturb was on door but it took over an hour to get it as they couldn't locate the housekeeping keys. Breakfast table not setup properly in morning as couldn't turn tables around fast enough. Very disappointed considering we don't earn much and this was a big deal. We do go away quite a lot as can't afford abroad. On a positive note the staff were very friendly.

The grounds were extensive and well kept. The rooms were clean and comfortable
Other Comments
The public areas were cold as the air conditioning had not been reset for the lower temperatures outside. The food at breakfast time was not hot and served on cold plates. Staff were attentive ONCE you managed to get their attention. A distinct lack of customer focus as their prime business appears to be coaches and conferences.

Modern, well designed hotel with spacious bedrooms set in well maintained grounds far from the madding crowds. The normal 'English breakfast' was set apart by the quality of the food offered, well cooked and with good service. good service.

Although we like this hotel, service at breakfast was very poor. The buffet dishes were not checked and refilled - always had to remind staff. Had to ask for coffee, not offered it. Plates were cold.

In rural setting close to Avebury & Cirencester.

V busy on Sat night so staff stretched and service slow. This venue is in my opinion, primarily a conference/wedding venue with coach parties overnighting.

We paid £69 for one nights stay, a bottle of wine and a buffet breakfast each. We also used the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and steamroom/sauna. I haven't stayed anywhere better for the price and the food was worth the money too. The rooms were clean and a good size, the staff were really friendly and the public areas/facilities were well presented and tidy. I have stayed at a lot better hotels but have paid a lot more money so I am taking this into consideration when giving this review
