Overview

Ivy House Country Hotel is close to the coastal town of Lowestoft, and sits on the banks of Oulton Broad within 21 acres of gardens, lawns, ponds, marshes and thatched barns.

The hotel is in the Broads National Park, and you can stroll into the village of Oulton Broad directly from the hotel's gardens. Full of scenic waterways and wildlife, the national park also has plenty of walking and cycling routes, or you can travel through it by boat and moor up to explore the nearby villages and waterside pubs.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Lowestoft’s promenade, and beyond that the sandy beaches south of town offer plenty of options for coastal walks. Local attractions including Africa Alive!, Pleasurewood Hills and the seaside town of Southwold are within 25 minutes' drive. The coastal resort of Great Yarmouth and the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve are less than 30 minutes' drive away.

An extensive refurbishment programme was completed in 2014, and included the addition of Eve's Bar, which has panoramic views over the gardens, ponds and over to the Broads. It's a great spot for a cream tea, a pre-dinner drink or a bar snack. You can also order a picnic hamper to enjoy at one of the many picnic tables within the grounds.

For fine dining, head to the Crooked Barn Restaurant, which has held two AA Rosettes since 2004. Head chef Keith Parton serves a menu of local and seasonal ingredients in the characterful 16th-century barn.

All guests get homemade biscuits on arrival.

From the press:

  • "The attractively decorated bedrooms are housed in garden wings, and many have lovely views of the grounds to the countryside beyond" -- The AA Hotel Guide 2017

It was very hot and the only outdoor seating were wooden picnic tables no umbrellas either It would have been nice if there had been something more comfortable to sit and read our papers We did eventually find 2 chairs which we took to the garden Also the flower beds looked very neglected which was a shame as the grounds with not too much effort could have been stunning A few hanging baskets and pots would have made all the difference

One minor point. After having a beautifully cooked steak one evening I ordered a vegetable moussaka the next day thinking it would be wonderful but was disappointed when it turned out to be more like an Italian tomato based mix with just a couple of slices of mozzarella on top. Not a hint of nutmeg or cinnamon or the lovely creamy white sauce which make this dish so tasty. But I still ate it!!

Arrived for a one night stay with parents. Booking in very easy and staff always on the desk. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Rooms extremely comfortable and ours had a lovely wood beam ceiling. Bathroom was huge and compleat with soft towels and plenty of toiletries. Kettle and cafeteria were a lovely touch and came complete with a picture of fresh coffee along with tea hot chocolate ect and some homemade biscuits. The grounds are lovely although we felt something could be done with the lake as it was a little smelly with the stagnant water. We sat in the summerhouse and enjoyed a drink (perfect). Although we never ate in the restaurant we had breakfast there which I can highly recommend. The poached eggs are to die for (well done chef). A wonderfully weekend thank you.

Location is great with a lovely harbour about a 3 min drive. Here you can enjoy the water and boats while having a drink or coffee as there are plenty of eating places. There is also a lovely park to walk around and has a free museum.. A great hotel in a great location.

A few negative things - tv remote didn't work the whole time - I asked for a replacement but didn't receive one - I think there should have been some sort of handle over the bath to assist getting in Unfortunately reception wasn't very professional in handling problems but they tried.
