Why We Love It

  • This historic retreat is on the banks of the River Trent in rural Derbyshire
  • A Norman mill tower that is almost 1000 years old forms part of the hotel building
  • The Peak District National Park is 45 minutes' drive away

The Priest House Hotel in Derbyshire is a historic property in a picturesque riverside setting. The main hotel building incorporates a Norman mill tower dating back to the 11th century.

Located on the banks of the Trent, The Priest House Hotel is a 5-minute drive from the small market town of Castle Donington. The town has a museum, and although the castle that gave the town its name is no longer standing, the original church remains.

Other local attractions include Calke Park National Nature Reserve and National Trust property Calke Abbey, both around 20 minutes' drive away. The city of Derby is 20 minutes' drive away and Nottingham takes 30 minutes. The Peak District National Park and Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are both less than an hour's drive away.

Some of the bedrooms are in cottages just over a small bridge that crosses the river. They were built in the 17th century and have original fireplaces and beamed ceilings. Executive Double Rooms are modern and larger than cottage bedrooms, and are in the main hotel building. Some have views of the River Trent.

The hotel has a fine-dining restaurant, and its Millstream Bar & Terrace (which was refurbished in 2016) serves less formal fare and traditional afternoon tea.

Travelzoo tip: On Tuesdays, two people can go for afternoon tea on a 1950s heritage train, through the Ecclesbourne Valley (around 50 minutes' drive away), for £45.

Peaceful and picturesque riverside location. The hotel offered one of the best hotel breakfasts we've had, freshly-cooked rather than a buffet. The main restaurant was pricey but the Millstream Bar and Terrace offered excellent-quality food at reasonable prices.

They forgot to take our order for breakfast on the Friday morning, which was ok, these things happen; but an apology from the waitress would have been appreciated rather than an attitude of indifference. The waitress on the previous morning was on her own and far more rushed, yet she remained in good spirits and her lovely personality shone through.

Lovely hotel in an excellent setting. The staff were very friendly, especially Barnaby in the bar. The bed was very comfortable. The food could have been better. We ate in the bar and I think there could have been more choice.
