Why We Love It

  • This historic retreat is on the banks of the River Trent in rural Derbyshire
  • A Norman mill tower that is over 1000 years old forms part of the hotel building
  • The Peak District National Park is 45 minutes' drive away

The Priest House Hotel in Derbyshire is a historic property in a picturesque riverside setting. The main hotel building incorporates a Norman mill tower dating back to the 11th century.

Located on the banks of the Trent, The Priest House Hotel is a 5-minute drive from the small market town of Castle Donington. The town has a museum, and although the castle that gave the town its name is no longer standing, the original church remains.

Other local attractions include Calke Park National Nature Reserve and National Trust property Calke Abbey, both around 20 minutes' drive away. The city of Derby is 20 minutes' drive away and Nottingham takes 30 minutes. The Peak District National Park and Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are both less than an hour's drive away.

Some of the bedrooms are in cottages just over a small bridge that crosses the river. They were built in the 17th century and have original fireplaces and beamed ceilings. Executive Double Rooms are modern and larger than cottage bedrooms, and are in the main hotel building. Some have views of the River Trent.

The hotel has a fine-dining restaurant, and its Millstream Bar & Terrace (which was refurbished in 2016) serves more informal fare and traditional afternoon tea, with a gentleman's option.

All the food was delicious and it was an enjoyable experience suitable for a foodie or anyone who appreciates good food.. The service was friendly and the setting is very beautiful. Our room was cold on arrival (and I would recommend that they get double glazing throughout) but we were promptly provided with a heater and our stay was very warm and cosy. Looking forward to going again :)

Our only gripe is that we booked the DBB offer for the sat but called hotel and booked an additional night room only on the Fri. Website said they had an informal dining room where we ate Fri ( fish and chips, burger etc on menu) When we went down for our dinner booking sat night we're told a function on so would be in bar restaurant and we're initially handed sane menu as previous night. After my husband complained we were then able to select from proper menu although in bar. We felt that if we hadn't already stayed extra night we would have been fobbed off with cheaper menu as it would have been hard to have made it up to the £39 pp advertised
