Why We Love It

  • This 19th-century manor sits in 19 acres of grounds with a private lake
  • It's on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the villages of Dumbleton and Winchcombe
  • Nearby towns include Stratford-upon-Avon, Tewkesbury and Evesham
  • We visited the hotel and loved the peaceful atmosphere and the sweeping driveway

Dumbleton Hall Hotel is a Grade II-listed manor house set in 19 acres of private grounds bordered by woodland. The present building sits on the site of the original 16th-century house, and once hosted the novelist Mrs Gaskell and the poet John Betjeman, who is rumoured to have written three of his poems here. We visited the property and loved the stunning views of the Vale of Evesham and the surrounding Cotswolds countryside.

The ancient market town of Winchcombe, with its quaint shops, pubs and tea rooms, is 10 minutes' drive away. The ruins of 13th-century Hailes Abbey, where you can follow an audio tour or visit the museum, are within a 15-minute drive. You can also visit Tewkesbury -- a 20-minute drive away -- to see the medieval buildings and narrow alleyways that surround the Benedictine abbey.

Batsford Arboretum, a 56-acre botanical garden with one of the largest collections of trees and shrubs in England, Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon are all around 30 minutes' drive away. Gloucester, with its 11th-century cathedral, is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Dinner and Sunday lunch are served in The Cedar Tree Restaurant, which has an extensive wine list. Afternoon tea, coffee and bar snacks are available in The Olive Lounge, and drinks are served in The Library Bar and Lounge.

Bedrooms vary in size and character but all have views of the gardens or the Vale of Evesham. Dogs are welcome, but not in the public rooms (fees apply; see policies for details).

Really good service, attentive staff. Comfortable rooms and bed, and perfect location close by to lots of towns with plenty to explore.

Attention to detail could have been better, for example at dinner my wine glass was dirty and had clearly not been polished.

windows in room so filthy it was impossible to see out when the sun was shining on them. I complained but the manager could not be bothered to speak to me or rectify the matter.
