Why We Love It

  • This 14th-century manor lies on the banks of the River Dart in Devon
  • The property won a 2015 Condé Nast Johansens Award for Excellence
  • Profits from the hotel support The Dartington Hall Trust charity
  • The restaurant overlooks Grade II-listed gardens

Dartington Hall is a 14th-century manor set in 800 acres of Grade II-listed gardens on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. The estate is a destination in its own right, with an on-site cinema, a restaurant, a visitor centre and a selection of shops. The hotel hosts events such as the annual Ways with Words Festival, where readers can meet authors and hear guest speakers.

The Grade I-listed property is a 10-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park -- a place of "honey-tinged moors" and "moss-smothered boulders in woods of twisted trees", says Lonely Planet. Dartmoor was one of the filming locations for Steven Spielberg's "War Horse". Other nearby places to visit include Exeter and Plymouth, and the towns on the English Riviera: Brixham, Torquay and Paignton. All are less than 35 minutes' drive away.

The estate dates from 1388 and was once home to two of Henry VIII's wives, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr. At its heart is a courtyard containing the restored 14th-century Great Hall, as well as the 16th-century apartment blocks. The Guardian describes it as "an enchanting scene". The White Hart Inn overlooks the property's Grade II-listed gardens and features fare from local producers.

Ensuite bedrooms are positioned around the medieval courtyard and overlook the grounds. Standard Double with Separate Bathroom bedrooms are not ensuite but have a private bathroom a short distance away. Wi-Fi is free.

From the press:

  • "This magnificent hall in Devon is a far cry from the usual country house hotel -- it's a not-for-profit social enterprise promoting social justice, sustainability and the arts" -- The Guardian

Dartington Hall is part of Dartington estate, and is not a hotel first and foremost. We were blown away by the history of the place as well as the history of the trust that ensures that Dartington Hall remains a place vibrant with culture, education, beauty, consciousness of connection to nature..-it is difficult to describe but don't expect a typical hotel break. This is more like getting a glimpse an alternative universe. Came back inspired, having found out about Schumacher College, and all the people who have passed through Dartington Hall.

Wonderful place but rooms let down by standard of cleanliness. Also was given loft room and ceiling height was too low to stand up in and kept hitting my head.It was very hot and a very small window and very stuffy. No wardrobe to hang clothes (lived out of suitcase )and hardly any floor space. However a lovely unique location and I am sure it would have been more enjoyable in a ground floor room.

The location and the gardens

The staff were extremely helpful and courteous. My only comment about room was that it could do with a 'spring' clean - i.e. quite a lot of dust, cobwebs and marks on walls. The beds etc were fine - just felt that maybe the cleaning was a bit rushed.

Peaceful and superb grounds. all staff were brilliant and really laid back. Excellent room (W8) with vaulted ceiling. only minor point being absence of a full mirror in the bedroom leading to hairdrying difficulties for my wife!

Great location with some really good local foodie pubs if you don't want to eat on site.

The location was breath taking, both the house and gardens, a hidden treasure.

It did involve quite a few steps/staircases but we did see people with reduced mobility so presumably there are some accommodation/rooms more suited the them. We stayed during a hot period of weather and our upper story bedroom was very hot at night making it difficult to sleep, fans would have helped. It did not however spoil the stay.
