After a 3-night stay in the town of Densenzano del Garda, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, you'll head to Venice to board MSC Liric. From Venice, you'll sail down the coast to Bari, the capital of Italy's sunny "heel", Puglia. The region has "everything the Italophile craves", says Lonely Planet, so potter round the streets for history, culture and tasty food in abundance.
The next stop is the island of Santorini, where you can explore the beautiful white and blue villages built on the clifftops high above the crystal-clear Aegean sea.
You'll continue on to Chania, Crete's second-largest city, which has a pretty Venetian quarter and an Old Town that leads down to the Venetian Harbour, with narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants
The final stop will be Split in Croatia. There, you can take a stroll down the Riva, the popular seafront promenade, which is known for its cafés and restaurants. From Split, you'll sail back to Venice for your flight home.
The 1976-passenger MSC Lirica is a traditional cruise ship with "Italian flair", according to Cruise Critic. It's one of the fleet's smaller ships, and its "spacious yet intimate environment" (Cruise Reviews) and manageable size makes it ideal for first-time cruisers.
Features include a large Broadway-style theatre, four restaurants (some specialising in Italian cuisine), eight bars and lounges, and a spa centre with panoramic sea views (supplements apply for treatments). There are also daily cookery and language classes.
- Outside Cabins cost from £1149 per person, and Balcony Cabins from £1499 per person
- One child aged 2-11 can stay from £899
