Itinerary
Start your tour in the small medieval town of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. Explore the Benedictine abbey, which dates back to the 9th century. Or, wander the Medieval streets lined with turreted mansions, and half-timbered houses. The next day, choose between a 9km or 12km walk from Beaulieu to Port de Gagnac. Walk past tiny rural hamlets, traditional farmland, and through dappled woodlands and evergreen forests. Now rest your head (and feet) for the night.
The following morning you'll venture to Loubressac, where you'll spend two nights. Revered as one of best walks of the trip, you'll tick off sweeping views over Dordogne's splendid countryside. A highlight includes the fortification of Château de Castelnau. Meander through meadows, orchards, and vineyards. You'll pass through the region's cheese factory, the Fromagerie de Rocamadour. The day ends in Loubressac, a tiny, fortified village perched high on the hillside.
The next day, you can choose from a 9.5km or a 14.5km walk. Visit the caverns of the Gouffre de Padirac and take a boat on the underground river. Or, go on a circular walk through a gorge to the picturesque village of Autoire.
Then, continue with a short transfer to the delightful village of Carennac. Perched high above the Dordogne, sits the restored manor house with ornate dovecotes and Cluniac priory. Follow country lanes, and wild flowered footpaths to reach the pretty riverside village of Floirac. At the end of the walk, you'll cross the river to reach the medieval town of Martel. Here, you'll spend two nights. Take a circular walk and visit postcard-perfect Gluges. Edith Piaf was a regular visitor in the village church there.
This leisurely itinerary will enable you to see some of the most beautiful French villages. You could settle down for a picnic on the way or enjoy local cuisine at your hotels' restaurants. Regional specialities include duck or goose with Black Diamond truffles.
