Hotel details
Porto Mare Hotel is a deluxe modern property on the Lido promenade outside Funchal. It has over three acres of lush tropical gardens, full of hundreds of species of tropical plants. You'll stay in a room with views over the Atlantic.
The hotel has four restaurants and three bars, which host acoustic performances every evening. There are five pools in total, including two large, lagoon-like pools surrounded by greenery. There's also a smaller splash pool and two heated indoor pools. Wi-Fi is free.
A shuttle runs regularly to Funchal's cobbled Old Town, or taxis cost around 5€. You could take a cable car up to Monte Palace, explore the famous gardens, then ride back down on a traditional wicker toboggan. The Mercado is a real highlight—it is packed with tropical fruit bursting with colour.
About the tours
On your full-day tour to Porto Moniz, you'll visit the Cabo Girão Skywalk, which has sweeping sea views. It's then on to the Madeira Banana Center, followed by the Fanal Forest. This otherworldly, ancient laurel forest has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stop for lunch at the Cachalote restaurant, which sits right on the volcanic rocks, surrounded by natural pools, and the Atlantic Ocean.
In Santana, you'll visit the Palheiro Gardens, also known as Blandy's Gardens after they were acquired by the Blandy family in 1885. These botanical gardens look out to the ocean, and are home to a diverse range of tropical plants. Then, head up to the Pico de Arieiro, Madeira's third-highest peak for incredible views. You'll also visit the village of Santana, with its unique triangular houses, and get a Madeiran rum tasting. Lunch is included at the Quinta do Furao restaurant, which has views of the ocean and the mountains.
