About the Isle of Man
The Isle of Man sits in the Irish Sea, between Cumbria and Northern Ireland. The island was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2016 thanks to its wide-ranging landscapes -- perfect for spotting seals, dolphins and puffins along the cliff-fringed coastline, exploring rock pools and waterfalls among forests and glens, hitting the beach with a bucket and spade, or hiking the network of trails that criss-cross its rolling countryside.
In the picturesque capital of Douglas on the east coast, you'll find a sweeping sandy bay, horse-drawn trams trotting along the promenade, and the Manx Museum, which tells the story of the island's 10,000-year history, including its Viking and Celtic past.
Douglas is also the starting point for exploring further afield on the island's heritage railway. You can head south on the brightly coloured steam trains -- said to have been the inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine -- to see the ancient cobbled streets of Castletown and medieval Castle Rushen, or take the postbox-red electric train north along the coast to call at pretty harbour towns.
You can also pick up the quirky Victorian mountain railway to the summit of Snaefell -- the island's highest point, from which you can see England, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales on a clear day.
The 4-star Comis Hotel & Golf Resort is in 200 acres of landscaped gardens, a short drive from Douglas. The property has an 18-hole championship golf course (supplements apply), as well as a fitness centre and two restaurants -- Snaefell Restaurant, which has views across the grounds, and the bistro-style Le Brûlot Bar & Grill.
The hotel provides a shuttle service to Douglas during the day, which takes approximately 15 minutes.
