First, you'll fly to Zagreb and transfer to your hotel in the seaside town of Lovran. You'll meet your fellow travellers over a welcome drink and sample specialities from the Kvarner Gulf at a traditional dinner. This is "one of Europe's most underrated regions for food", according to The Daily Telegraph. Over the next week, you'll discover the highlights of Istria, which The Daily Telegraph calls "Croatia's uncrowded alternative to Dubrovnik".
The following day, you'll tour the historic seaside resort of Opatija, which is nicknamed "the Nice of the Adriatic" (The Daily Telegraph), was once a favourite retreat of the Hapsburg royal family. The town is famous for its fine chocolate, which you'll learn to make and sample in an afternoon session with a local chocolatier.
Next, you'll visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park, where you'll wander the bridges that connect the terraced lakes and cascading waterfalls. You'll also take a boat trip across Lake Kozjak, where you might spot brown bears, lynx and wildcats.
On day four, you'll explore Pula, home to one of the world's largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheatres, and Rovinj, a pretty old seaport. In the afternoon, you'll continue to a working farm in the countryside to sample the local olive oil.
Days five to seven will be spent at leisure in Lovran, from where you can choose to take optional excursions including a city tour of Ljubljana in Slovenia, a truffle-hunting adventure in the nearby village of Livade or a trip to the medieval hilltop village of Motovun. On day six, you'll enjoy a boat trip to the picturesque island of Cres, where you'll have a tasty barbecue lunch on board ship.
On day eight, you'll transfer back to Zagreb for your return flight to the UK.
Remisens Hotel Excelsior is a 4-star hotel above the seafront promenade by the Adriatic Sea in the centre of Lovran. The hotel has a private beach, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and two restaurants. Bike and walking pole rental is included for those who wish to explore the surrounding hills and forests.
