Hotel and ship details
Swiss Inn Resort is a 5-star resort on a private sandy beach by the Red Sea. Food and drink is included for the whole week, from huge buffet spreads to wine, beer, and cocktails by the sea. Staff can arrange surfing lessons, snorkelling, and glass-bottom boat rides for a supplement.
MS Renaissance is a river cruise ship with a swimming pool on the top deck and a restaurant on the lower deck. You can spend your days relaxing on the sun loungers by the pool, taking in the views, and enjoying drinks under a shady parasol.
Cruise itinerary
You'll pass majestic monuments and get some fascinating glimpses of daily life on the riverbanks as you cruise along the Nile. The scenery is surprisingly lush and peaceful, with green farmland that gradually peters out to red desert and distant mountains. Villages are studded with beautiful mosques and minarets, and the call to prayer often rings out over the water.
The pace of the voyage is very relaxed, and seeing the colossal temples emerge over the horizon is a bucket-list travel experience. Shore visits are not included unless you add an excursion pack. The light excursion package costs from £159 per person, and includes a good number of sights:
- Karnak... is the world's largest temple complex, with immense statues, obelisks, and intact hieroglyphs.
- Luxor... is a short walk from the port, and has a really impressive avenue lined with enormous sphinx statues.
- Kom Ombo... is perched on a hill overlooking the water, and is dedicated to the crocodile and falcon gods.
- Philae... is an island-based temple complex surrounded by bobbing sailboats and kingfishers.
- Edfu... was once completely buried by desert sand, and its colourful hieroglyphs are especially well preserved.
The full excursion package costs from £189 per person. Add this if you'd also like to visit the Valley of the Kings (a necropolis of underground tombs, which you can journey inside like Indiana Jones) and the Temple of Hatshepsut (a monumental temple designed by an ancient queen).
