Following an overnight flight from the UK, you'll start the tour in Japan's capital, Tokyo. You'll visit the Imperial Palace Plaza, the National Garden, Ueno -- where you'll find many of the city's top museums -- and Akihabara, known as Electric Town. And for excellent street food, try Memory Lane, where you'll find "red lanterns and exposed wires, all crammed beneath train arches; it's 'Blade Runner' and old Japan all at once" (The Guardian), as well as the succulent yakitori skewers it's famous for.
The second day is spent visiting Mount Fuji. As well as taking in the views from Subaru Line 5th Station, you'll take a boat ride across Ashi Crater Lake, followed by a cable-car ride to the Hakone Shrine at the top of Mount Komagatake. You'll then be able to use your Japan Rail Pass for your final day in Tokyo to explore further afield, such as UNESCO World Heritage Site Toshogu Shrine or Tsukiji Market to see the famous fish auction.
From Tokyo, you'll then travel to Kanazawa, where you'll find beautifully preserved samurai and geisha districts, authentic tea houses and an array of handicrafts, from ceramics to delicate gold-leaf work. Your final stop is Kyoto -- a place "synonymous with ancient temples, tea ceremony masters, traditional ryokan inns and centuries-old craftsmanship" (The Daily Telegraph). Here, you'll see UNESCO World Heritage Sites Nijo Castle and the Golden Pavilion, as well as Kyoto Imperial Palace and its spectacular garden.
Your time in Kyoto also includes a visit to compact Nara, which is home to an impressive eight World Heritage Sites -- such as Todai-Ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine -- as well as a park where hundreds of deer roam freely. You'll take the train to Osaka for your return flight to the UK.
