You'll spend the first three nights in Havana. The 5-star Hotel Nacional de Cuba -- where Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire stayed -- is in a 1930s building and has views of the Malecón, an 8-kilometre-long seafront promenade, where locals and tourists alike take evening strolls. You'll have a 2-hour tour in one of the classic American cars, an immediately recognisable symbol of life in Cuba.
It's a 10-minute drive to the newly restored National Capitol Building -- the city's "most ambitious and grandiose building", according to Lonely Planet -- and La Bodeguita del Medio, a bar that's famous as the birthplace of the mojito and for the famous names it has hosted, including Gabriel García Márquez, Nat King Cole and Salvador Allende.
Next, you'll head cross-country to Cienfuegos. It has "elegance, enlightened French airs and feisty Caribbean spirit," says Lonely Planet, adding, "if Cuba has a Paris, this is most definitely it". You'll have free time to stroll around its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its classical architecture, or to relax on the beach, which is within 20 minutes' walk from the guest house.
You'll then transfer to Trinidad. During your two days there, you'll have a guided walking tour of the city centre, which is home to cobbled streets and pastel-coloured mansions and houses. You'll also stop at the Plaza Mayor, in the colonial old town.
You'll then travel to Cuba's northern cays for four all-inclusive nights at the 5-star Meliá Las Dunas. Cayo Santa María is described as "a slice of paradise" by the Daily Mirror. The hotel is on a white-sand beach that is lapped by the Caribbean Sea. There are four outdoor pools, 12 restaurants and six bars.
Finally, you'll head back to Havana for a night before your return flight.
