The tour starts in Yangon, where the dazzling Shwedagon Pagoda dominates the skyline. Take to the street-food stalls to taste the country's "melting pot of flavours and spices" (Forbes) and hop on the Yangon Circular Railway for a slow journey through paddy fields, rustic villages and market towns.
Next, you'll fly to Inle Lake. A protected wetland bird sanctuary and an area of great natural beauty, the lake is also home to stilt-house villages and floating gardens.
You'll then fly to Mandalay, which is a bustling city but has a strong Bamar culture, thanks to its "countless monasteries, pagodas, workshops and teahouses" (Lonely Planet). You'll stay a 20-minute walk from Mandalay Palace, which was built in the 1850s and is at the centre of a walled fort with a moat.
The penultimate stop is the temple-strewn plains of Bagan. The 26-square-mile area is "one of the world's greatest archaeological sites, a sight to rival Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat" (The Daily Telegraph), and is dotted with over 2000 brick stupas that have been carefully preserved and restored. Finally, you'll head back to Yangon for your last night before the return flight.
