Itinerary
A convenient door-to-door transfer will take you from Munich Airport to your ship in Vilshofen. You week-long cruise will call at:

  • Vilshofen to Passau… explore Vilshofen's pretty old town then head to Passau, known as the City of Three Rivers. Embark on a walking tour, pick up a bike for a cycling tour, or join a guide to hike high into the hills. Enjoy a traditional Oktoberfest celebration on the ship the first evening, with beer and Bavarian folk music.
  • Linz… join a walking or cycling tour in Linz or opt for a full-day excursion to Salzburg, which includes a stop in Mondsee, site of the wedding scene in The Sound of Music.
  • Weissenkirchen… take in awe-inspiring views from the top deck as you sail through the Strudengau  and Wachau valleys. You can visit the UNESCO-protected Melk Abbey, hike up to Dürnstein fortress, or cycle past the vineyards along the river.
  • Vienna… you'll see the majestic opera house and the former imperial palace on a guided tour, then have the afternoon to explore the coffeehouses and parks at your leisure.
  • Bratislava… join a regular walking tour to learn about the city's history, or opt for a food tour to get a taste of Slovak cuisine. Active types can hike up to Bratislava Castle for panoramic views of the city.
  • Budapest (overnight on the ship)… enter in show-stopping style along the River Danube, then tour both the Buda (hilly) and Pest (flat) sides of the river. The rest of the day is at your leisure, and at night you'll see the Parliament Building glow gold over the dark, shimmering water.

On your last day, an airport transfer will pick you up from the ship, and you'll fly back to the UK from Budapest.

Ship details
AmaWaterways has a luxurious fleet that focuses on "excellent food and wine, [and] tasteful decor", according to Travel + Leisure. This European itinerary is listed as one of The Best 10 Danube River Cruises for 2025 by Forbes.

Ships average around 156 guests, and service is exemplary due to the high crew-to-guest ratio. Meals are all included, from breakfast and lunch buffets to lavish 4-course dinners. Much of the food is inspired by the ports of call—look forward to the rich chocolate sachertorte in Vienna—and regional wine and beer is served with dinner.

Each ship has a fleet of bicycles, and you can expect cooking demonstrations, musical performances, evening entertainment, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Other options
Sail in a French Balcony Stateroom from £2099 per person.
