Itinerary
- Hong Kong… you'll get two pre-cruise nights to experience this enchanting neon city brimming with incredible cuisine, limitless shopping, buzzing bars, and cultural diversity fused together in a city "wrapped in mystery" (Fodor’s).
- Shanghai… among its historic sites and peaceful gardens are towering futuristic buildings. Visit the Shanghai Museum, the Yuyuan Garden, the China Art Museum, and the old town's bazaars. Shanghai's charm is not just in its famous landmarks, but also in its quiet tree-lined streets, the Bund's historic colonial buildings, sweet boutiques, and a dizzying array of food options, from it's hard to beat street food to celebrity chef restaurants.
- Kagoshima… located on Japan's southern Satsuma Peninsula. From around March, it's expected that over 1000 stunning cherry trees are likely to bloom in this city that overlooks an active volcano.
- Nagasaki... was the only city connected to the outside world during Japan's centuries of isolation. Visit the old Portuguese district by the harbour, wander the oldest Chinatown in Japan, and tour the Atomic Bomb Museum to learn more about the city's dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament.
- Busan… one of South Korea's friendliest and most relaxed cities and home to some of South Korea's most stunning beaches like the Haeundae and Gwangalli. Besides the Busan Aquarium, see the Beomeosa and Yonggungsa temples, and the Geumjeong Fortress for a taste of historical sites in the city. The bustling markets in Busan should also be on the must visit list.
- Fukuoka… as a modern city, it's lively and bustling with an international flavour and plenty of innovative architectural development. The Naka River promenade and riverfront park are pleasant strolling areas, while there are many top-class theatres, theme parks, and art galleries.
- Osaka… you can try some of Osaka's fantastic street food and visit an aquarium; explore one of Kyoto's 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites; or see Gion, the geisha district, where you can find hostesses on the wooden Tatsumi Bridge wearing colourful kimonos.
- Shimizu… the waterfront in this port town features a four-story shopping mall with a Ferris wheel and a Shimizu Sushi museum. A clear day will also reveal Mount Fuji's snow-capped peaks.
- Yokohama… a relaxed bay location, jazz clubs and microbreweries, and an art scene that is trendy and hip, Yokohama offers a slower pace of life.
- Tokyo… you'll disembark the Westerham here and transfer to the 4-star Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo (or similar), set for three nights exploring Tokyo and Mount Fuji. Discover the Japanese capital, followed by a full-day excursion to Mount Fuji and Hakone National Park, including a boat ride on Lake Ashi, the Hakone Ropeway Cable Car, and a high-speed bullet train ride back to Tokyo. Lunch is included.
This cruise concludes in Tokyo.
Ship details
Westerdam is the perfect example of Holland America Line's "newer, younger persona", says Cruise Critic — the "refined, but casual experience" attracts its most active and destination-focussed passengers.
The ship focusses on top-class food and music, with live acts throughout the ship, and excellent meals abound (whether they're in the main restaurant, the enormous buffet, the complimentary room service, or one of the four speciality venues).
There's two pop-up gourmet restaurants at reasonable prices, and a theatrical test kitchen where passengers can follow step-by-step cooking classes. There are nightly theatre productions, and entertainment continues after midnight for those who want to stay up — head to the Music Walk to visit the beloved B.B. King's Blues Club, see duelling pianos at Billboard Onboard, or enjoy classical or jazz music at the Lincoln Centre Stage. There are several bars open late, too.
