Hotel du Parc is in Colombare di Sirmione near the south shore of Lake Garda. The historic fortified town of Sirmione, set on a narrow peninsula piercing the lake, is 10 minutes' drive away, and the hotel offers a free shuttle service to take you there (departs six times per day). Rough Guides calls it "scenically impressive", while Fodor's says it’s "enchanting". There's a thermal spa, a 13th-century fortress and "cobbled streets" that "wind their way through medieval arches" (Fodor's).
The 4-star Grabrielli Sandwirth in Venice is converted from a 14th-century Venetian villa and is under five minutes' walk from Saint Mark's Square, the Doge's Palce and the Basilica of St Mark. While in Venice, we recommend heading to the Fondaco dei Tedeschi department store (less than two minutes' walk from the Rialto Bridge) for views of the city and islands from the rooftop terrace, and strolling to the arty Dorsoduro district for an Aperol spritz at one of the trendy bars.
MSC Musica has a 3-tier waterfall in the foyer, with an iconic grand piano suspended above the water. There is a theatre, casino and two main buffet restaurants, as well as an à la carte restaurant and sushi bar (extra fees apply). The ship also has indoor and outdoor pools.
Departing from the island city of Venice, you'll cruise south to Brindisi -- this Italian port city is one of the gateways to Puglia, the heel of Italy. "Everything the Italophile craves is there in abundance," says Lonely Planet -- "Puglia can surely now take its place in the first rank of Italy's famous regions."
Next, you'll call at Katakolon, from where you can visit the ancient site of Olympia. You'll then make port in Mykonos, a glamorous island in the Cyclades, Piraeus, for excursions to Athens, and Saranda, a coastal city in Albania. Finally, you'll sail to Dubrovnik. This walled city of tumbling red rooftops and cobbled squares is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
