Sail aboard Balmoral on this round-trip from Newcastle, calling at:

  • Crossing the Arctic Circle... cruise into the Arctic and experience the spectacular phenomenon of the sun setting through this magical boundary.
  • Alta, the City of Northern Lights (overnight onboard)... with the first Northern Lights observatory built in 1859, this destination is one of the most northern cities in the world, and where you'll witness "some really stunning country" (Lonely Planet). You could take a guided tour of the tundra to increase your chances of seeing the lights, or go whale watching (orca have been known to enter the Altafjord in November).
  • Tromsøbesides being the cultural hub of the Arctic Circle, this island city is also a great place to see the Northern Lights, and book bucket-list experiences, such as husky sledding (supplements apply).
  • Narvik... a cable car ride from Narvikfjellet Mountain to its viewpoint on the Narvikfjellet Mountain (from £25) gives magnificent views over the Ofotfjord from this city, which is almost 250 miles into the Arctic Circle. We recommend a ride on the Narvikfjellet cable car to enjoy truly breathtaking views.
  • Bodø... you can observe the Aurora Borealis and the midnight sun here, as the island is situated between the Arctic Circle and the Lofoten Islands.

Ship details
As a small ship, Balmoral can navigate narrow waterways that larger ships can't reach. A "friendly, home from home vibe" with "high levels of personal service" are among the praises of Cruise Critic, who describes it as "classic small ship cruising with a fresh new look".

Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, and there are dining options to suit all occasions. There's also a buffet restaurant and several casual dining options around the ship for light bites. Afternoon tea is included every day, and includes sandwiches, scones, and cakes.

Take a dip in two generous swimming pools and four jacuzzis, plus there's a fully-equipped fitness centre.

You can relax in the lounges or play bowls, bingo, or even a bridge coach to help you improve your game during the day. The theatre hosts big-production shows at night that later transforms into a glitzy dance floor after the show.
