First you'll spend a night at the ultra-luxurious Shangri-La Vancouver, which The Daily Telegraph compliments for its ''reserved classic luxury and exceptional service''. Sandwiched between buzzy Downtown and the chic West End, the hotel occupies a spot in Vancouver's tallest building, and features an outdoor pool, spa, and Italian restaurant.

After a night of 5-star relaxation, you'll board Seabourn Odyssey to embark on your 11-night cruise calling at...

  • Ketchikan... is known for its indigenous Haida and Tlingit heritage. "There is no better place in the US to see totem poles in all their craning, colorful glory," says Lonely Planet, and the town's name means "thundering wings of an eagle" in Tlingit.
  • Sitka... a picturesque harbour town that fronts the deep-blue waters of the Pacific Ocean at the foot of the snow-capped Mount Edgecumbe.
  • Hubbard Glacier... glide past this incredible 7-mile long glacier where sights of humpback whales, seals, and otters often occur.
  • Inian Islands... cruise around this collection of half a dozen small, rocky islands at the end of the Icy Strait, which boast a particularly rich ecosystem, both on land and in the sea.
  • Icy Strait Point... owned by Alaska natives, Icy Strait Point has traditional wooden chalets and family-owned restaurants along the harbour. Try traditional crab cake on the pier or stroll through the nature trail in the forest, home to moose and bears.
  • Juneau... there's plenty to see and do straight from the ship, as you can head into the downtown on foot. Try out the local seafood, visit the frontier-themed shops, or make the 25-minute journey to the breath-taking Mendenhall Glacier.
  • Tracy Arm... is one of Alaska's classic fjords; you'll pass spectacular mountains, towering cliffs, and mesmerising waterfalls as you sail through the almost 50km long fjord.
  • Wrangell... one of the oldest towns in Alaska, this charming city has a fascinating history. Pick up a souvenir from local artisans specialising in traditional crafts, or take a visit to the Stikine River, known as one of the last great wilderness areas remaining in North America.
  • Misty Fjords National Monument... take in views of this vast mosaic of granite cliffs, deep fjords, and rock walls as you sail past its pristine natural landscapes. Its untouched wilderness makes it an ideal habitat for diverse wildlife, including bears, eagles, and marine mammals.
