Itinerary
- Seattle... spend two nights in the city centre, just over 20 minutes' walk from Seattle's iconic Space Needle, offering breathtaking views from its rotating glass floors. You can also walk to the famous Pike Place Market for over 500 shops, restaurants, and vendors before boarding Norwegian Bliss for your 7-night cruise.
- Juneau... the capital of Alaska and where "its dramatic hillside location and historic downtown buildings provide a frontier feeling", says Fodor's. It's the starting point for optional excursions to Mendenhall Glacier, which is a bewildering 13 miles long, as well as home to the Alaska State Museum, which is well worth a visit.
- Skagway... this historic gold-rush town is set against a backdrop of forested mountains, and a top spot for eagle sightings. You can also follow in the footsteps of Klondike gold seekers along the famous 33-mile Chilkoot Trail, literally an outdoor museum filled with remnants of the past, including abandoned pick axes, shovels, and supplies.
- Glacier Bay National Park... "a dreamy destination" (Lonely Planet), with vivid blue waters, cathedral-sized icebergs, and breaching humpback whales. Among the rich wildlife seen at Glacier Bay are porpoises, sea otters, brown and black bears, wolves, moose, and mountain goats.
- Ketchikan... known as the 'salmon capital of the world', it's close to the southern tip of Alaska, and the gateway to Misty Fiords National Monument, famed for its soaring cliffs, waterfalls, lakes, and glaciers. As Lonely Planet points out, "there is no better place in the US to see totem poles in all their craning, colorful glory" than the area abundant in Haida and Tlingit heritage.
- Victoria... where you'll spot double decker buses, stunning Victorian architecture, and homes resembling castles. Afternoon tea is a hugely popular past-time here, and we recommend checking out it's cosy tearooms and bakeries to sample the delicious loose-leaf tea. Also, don't leave without visiting the city's Chinatown — it's the oldest in Canada.
- Chicago... next, you'll travel from Seattle to the Windy City on an internal flight. On arrival in Chicago, you'll get two nights to explore the city from a deluxe downtown hotel on the Magnificent Mile, which is home to upscale restaurants and shopping, the historic Chicago Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower, and the 100-story John Hancock Center, which has a rooftop observation deck so you can take in panoramic city views. Finally, transfer to the airport to catch your flight home.
