Interesting historical building in a delightful small market town with helpful staff. The menu had plenty of choice including some unusual game options, partridge, pleasant and venison.

The hotel was lovely and the staff very friendly and welcoming

No direct phone number to book a table it’s a generic booking system for all the hotel group, i tried to ring on Saturday but the message was closed till Monday morning so I had to email. The food was average and a little disappointed

One minus, so difficult to find our room, other people commented on this as well. Old building, like a maze with long corridors, but main problem room signage which was rubbish!

Contacting the Black Swan to arrange the voucher booking proved to be impossible by telephone. The voucher stated simply phone to arrange your booking. We tried for two days using two numbers given, but apart from one occasion when I got put through to Accounts section, it was not possible to get anyone to answer. Finally we booked by e mail. I think you should look into this as this part of the experience was very annoying.

Service very slow and no parking. Main car park away from hotel. Fine as long it is not bad weather. Parking outside but only for 20 minutes.

Good menu choices. Well- cooked. Lovely staff. A little quiet at lunchtime but the slight lack of atmosphere didn't detract from a lovely two course meal using our voucher. Great price, too.

Service, choice and food.

The first member of staff we spoke to had such a dirty t shirt on , the staff who took the order gave the impression she didn’t want to be there, her waistcoat was badly stained as was the one the member of staff who served our meal. Whilst the food was good the service wasn’t

When we arrived we were shown to our table in a very nice room. Staff took drink order and returned for food order, service very efficient...only downside one of the party had dessert instead of a starter and it seemed to get forgotten so we had to remind them

The menu was more extensive than at the other Inn Collection Group hotels in which we've eaten in the last year. It was hard to choose what to eat. We all had starters and mains. One friend said the partridge & black pudding scotch egg was superb and the other loved her warm salad of heritage beets, butternut squash and roasted carrots. Two of us had seafood cocktails which had plenty of crayfish, smoked mackerel and a few prawns. These were served in a tall wine glass with a small wedge of lemon. There was no saucer in which to deposit our squeezed lemon and by the time we realised we needed a small spoon instead of a dessert fork with which to eat them the waiter had gone, so we managed with a fork. Sadly there was no venison so those 2 main courses were off, but the game casserole served with a large cheddar and sage pastry dumpling was tasty. The dumpling was a little hard on top but softened when pushed into the casserole. My pan roasted salmon with chickpea, butter bean, tomato, chorizo and spinach stew was excellent and I really enjoyed it. My friend also enjoyed her large portion of pan fried calves liver with bubble & squeak, bacon and crispy onions and the gravy really was rich. Once the staff started serving us they were very pleasant and we all enjoyed our meal. We felt it was good value for money and with a little more attention to detail it could have been really special.

On arrival we waited quite a while to let staff know we'd arrived because we had to queue at the bar for attention. I was a little put out when I said I'd booked a table for 4 to be waved away and told to sit at any table we liked. One table was set for 6 people and it would have been good for ours to have been set too. We planned to take a drink to the table to wait for our friends but were told 'One of the guys will take your order' so we found a table and sat down. We were ignored until our friends arrived. There were 4 menus - one was filthy and sticky, appearing to have ketchup smeared on it, and another was torn at the bottom. But things improved after that.

We were able to sit as long as we wished after the meal. Toilets and eating area clean.

Mian course of beef cheeks looked unappetising, like slop. It did not taste exceptional yet it was the most expensive main course. Chefs choice dessert of rum and pineapple was also very disappointing. On arrival we were not greeted. There was confusion over how to order...at the bar or at the table. Staff were constantly running around.

Had a lovely lunch but we all found the dining chairs very uncomfortable being curved with arms - made earring a bit awkward.

The staff were pleasant. Hotel was lovely. Nice decor & nice & clean

The quality of the food. It was OK, but both the burger & the fish were overcooked and dry. My mushroom starter had grit in it. We had the voucher that included a hot drink after the meal. But when they took our plates away they never asked if we would like our drinks yet, and we forgot it was a part of the deal until half way home. Shame they never mentioned it!
