Walked in to the chateau, after driving down a long gravel lane and by the extensive winery facilities, and were met with two very generous glasses of world class 2016 Pape Clement. The grounds are really nice - exquisite, 2000 year old olive trees are there each with its own history, and abut vineyards on three sides. The vineyards are actually in Pessac, the town, so it is a bit suburban, but that was charming in its own way, like an enclave. And the vineyard is kept free of weeds by horses with plows - watching them was like stumbling into the 18th century. Stayed two nights, and only felt a desire to stray out the one evening we did not arrange for dinner at the chateau. David, the concierge and whose role is to just make sure everyone is happy, did a tremendous job doing just that. The winery tour was very good (impressive facilities), the wines we tasted during the tour were not their best but we knew where to find their good stuff in their wine shop for competitive prices if we wanted it. Folks staying (a handful of couples from what I could tell) were a mix of knowledgeable wine types and complete wine novices. All seemed very comfortable and welcomed. We would go back for sure and probably will if the opportunity arises.
