The Royal Castle Hotel

Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is on the edge of Dartmouth's "picturesque" harbour, in "one of Devon's prettiest" riverside towns
  • The AA describes it as "distinctly different" with "considerable charm" -- it was originally four Tudor houses built on either side of a narrow lane
  • It still has original features such as spiral staircases, wooden beams, tudor fireplaces and oil paintings
  • There is a traditional pub bar, a modern bar and an AA-Rosette restaurant with "unbeatably fresh fish" (The AA)

"Wonderful historic hotel with delicious breakfasts and cosy ambience we all loved every minute there thanks so much to the fantastic staff !"

The Royal Castle Hotel has a "superb" (The Daily Telegraph) location on the edge of the "picturesque" harbour, in the riverside town of Dartmouth, which Lonely Planet calls "one of Devon's prettiest" towns.

Set within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this former coaching inn dates back from the 18th century, when four houses merged to become one. It still has many of its original features, including spiral staircases, wooden beams, flagstone floors and fireplaces. Famous previous guests include Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Cary Grant

In Dartmouth's harbour, where hundreds of fishing boats and yachts bob on the water in front of the rolling hills on the other side of the estuary. Dartmouth high street is bustling with boutique shops, indepedent art galleries and little cafés, and is two minutes' walk from the hotel.

Dartmouth Castle is less than 30 minutes' walk away, along the River Dart. You can take a break at Bayard's Cove Fort to enjoy the views of Dartmouth and Kingswear or alternatively, you can catch a ferry from Dartmouth pier to Kingswear. From there you can catch the Dartmouth Steam Railway to Paignton

Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands -- "two of Devon's finest beaches", says The Daily Telegraph -- are less than 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's "character and charm" (The AA) is abundant in the tradional Galleon Bar, which serves pub classics and local ales. There is also the modern Harbour Bar adjacent to it and the AA-Rosette restaurant, The Grill Room, is on the first floor. Its views are "hard-to-beat", while food served includes "unbeatably fresh" fish and "prime" local meats.

All rooms are individually decorated. Non-River View Rooms have views of the town.

My husband & myself spent two nights at the Royal Castle. We had a lovely room overlooking the inner courtyard. The staff were very professional, friendly & very helpful. Having breakfast overlooking the river with the sun shining on it was wonderful. Very good way to start the day. Would highly recommend the hotel.
