"Beautiful part of the world although the hotel is in the middle of a housing estate. Friendly staff gave very efficient service, even though they were in the middle of having the dining room decorated. The room was clean, well furnished and of a good size. Really enjoyed the 2 dinners that we had there with a good menu and food delicious and well presented. The breakfasts were average, ok full English but no alternatives. The Travelzoo deal meant that we felt we had had value for money."

Overview

Durker Roods Hotel is in the picturesque West Yorkshire village of Meltham, on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park.

The manor house dates back to 1870 and was once the private residence of Huddersfield entrepreneur Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin from 1946-1972, and after whom the famous DB series of cars is named. The building has maintained many of its original features, with traditional décor -- including fireplaces and chandeliers -- complemented by contemporary comforts such as free Wi-Fi. There’s also a modern restaurant serving traditional British cuisine for lunch and dinner.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Holmfirth, which has a selection of shops and tea rooms. Tours and wine-tasting sessions are available at the award-winning Holmfirth Vineyard. Shibden Hall & Park, EUREKA! National Children's Museum, Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all around 30 minutes' drive away.

For a day trip, the Brontë Parsonage Museum in pretty Haworth, Royal Armouries Leeds, Harewood House, the Emmerdale Studio Experience, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and York Racecourse are all around an hour's drive from the hotel.

The countryside surrounding the hotel has featured in numerous British TV series and films, including "Happy Valley", "Emmerdale" and "Last of the Summer Wine", much of which was filmed in Holmfirth. There's now a museum and an open-top bus tour to showcase the famous locations from the TV series.

The area is prime hiking territory, with some of the Peak District's most famous walks within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. After a day of exploring, you can enjoy the views across the rolling hills from the hotel bar, lounge or outdoor beer garden.

The hotel was pleasant. The room was comfortable, the shower room lacked soap dish, shelving and a toilet brush. The staff were warm and friendly.

The food is excellent. We had a very good evening meal, tasty food, well-presented, good service.
Other Comments
The room was appalling. Very poor quality furnishings, very outdated, desperately in need of refurb. No bedside lamps, just one ceiling light. Poor quality curtains, old fashioned and rickety cupboard, very basic bathroom, no milk provided with tea and coffee making facilities.

The hotel is undergoing refurbishment. Main staircase out of action, so we had to battle our way up 4 flights of the "back" stairs, steep narrow and with heavy fire doors. The room on the top floor was a good size, but cold and not very clean. The curtains did not close properly and they were heavily covered in cobwebs. Bathroom by contrast was spanking new, very warm and spacious. The staff were all delightful and the food excellent. I'm sure when all the rooms have been done it will be a great hotel.

The staff were polite but doing several different jobs so over stretched. The evening meal was of fairly good quality but things didn’t arrive that we ordered till after we had finished the meal.
Other Comments
The hotel was having ‘some work done’ which we weren’t informed of the fire alarm went off four times and the crockery wasn’t clean.
