Why We Love This Hotel

  • Durker Roods Hotel is three miles from the Peak District National Park, making it a great base for walkers
  • The hotel was the former home of Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin and after whom the DB series of cars were named
  • The manor dates back to 1870 -- expect traditional British décor, including original fireplaces and chandeliers

Overview

Durker Roods Hotel is in the picturesque West Yorkshire village of Meltham, on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park.

The manor house dates back to 1870 and was once the private residence of Huddersfield entrepreneur Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin from 1946-1972, and after whom the famous DB series of cars is named. The building has maintained many of its original features, with traditional décor -- including fireplaces and chandeliers -- complemented by contemporary comforts such as free Wi-Fi. There’s also a modern restaurant serving traditional British cuisine for lunch and dinner.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Holmfirth, which has a selection of shops and tea rooms. Tours and wine-tasting sessions are available at the award-winning Holmfirth Vineyard. Shibden Hall & Park, EUREKA! National Children's Museum, Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all around 30 minutes' drive away.

For a day trip, the Brontë Parsonage Museum in pretty Haworth, Royal Armouries Leeds, Harewood House, the Emmerdale Studio Experience, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and York Racecourse are all around an hour's drive from the hotel.

The countryside surrounding the hotel has featured in numerous British TV series and films, including "Happy Valley", "Emmerdale" and "Last of the Summer Wine", much of which was filmed in Holmfirth. There's now a museum and an open-top bus tour to showcase the famous locations from the TV series.

The area is prime hiking territory, with some of the Peak District's most famous walks within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. After a day of exploring, you can enjoy the views across the rolling hills from the hotel bar, lounge or outdoor beer garden.

Only negatives...Water pressure not good for showers. And slow to get tea or coffee for breakfast.

We could not find a thing that was any thing to complain about apart from music being too loud and disco like. Easy listening preferred during meals, but this is only our opinion.

This hotel is absolutely outstanding in every way, not just the location and surroundings, the friendly reception, the spotless comfortable well furnished and spacious room and en suite, the very well laid out dining room overlooking the gardens through magnificent large windows , the bar lounge opposite , the spotlessly clean service facilities and of course the comprehensive menu, the quality of the food served was magnificent, complemented by the most friendly and efficient service. All the staff throughout our stay were consistently friendly and helpful and went the extra mile to make our stay a success. This short break far exceeded all our expectations considering the many previous holiday hotels we have used over many years throughout Europe and the UK. We were made to feel really at home, Our complements and thanks for such a memorable stay.

From arrival to departure could not fault anything. Friendly staff, courteous service and lovely food. A big plus for us is that some of the rooms are dog friendly. Dogs are allowed in the bar but not the restaurant. Large free car park. The Travelzoo promotion represents unbelievable value for money.
Other Comments
Only minor gripe is that the breakfast plates were cold.

Lovely place staff really good and obliging, good really good but I must say buffet breakfast was not very hot. We were originally allocated a top floor bedroom which was quite dated and basic but we were relocated to ground floor where our room was really nice and the staff moved our luggage down for us. Lots of lovely countryside. Overall a really nice place and will definitely be returning.

Very welcoming from Reception staff. Dinning Room is very nicely decorated and the food is very tasty, well presented and in sufficient volume to suit the largest appetite. This hotel deal was excellent value for money and I would recommend guests to try the afternoon tea, with a good selection of sandwiches, cakes, and tea or coffee. Grounds looked well kept, neat and tidy. A little more attention to detail would improve the hotel greatly, but we would certainly return to see the improvements the hotel management is making.
