Overview

Opened in 1937, the Monte Vista Hotel is housed in a former schoolhouse and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout its lifetime, the property has added a second structure and undergone renovations to offer modern amenities. Located in Black Mountain, the boutique hotel is a five-minute walk from the charming town square’s restaurants, shops and museums. The surrounding area offers year-round outdoor activities including skiing, hiking and winery tours.

The intimate hotel has only 45 guest rooms, each uniquely outfitted with mountain-inspired décor. All accommodations include hardwood floors, Wi-Fi, bottled water and king or queen beds. Bathrooms feature showers and tubs, vessel sinks and rustic tilework. In keeping with the quaint, mountain retreat vibe, rooms do not include televisions.

Milton’s, the on-site restaurant, sources regional ingredients for its Southern cuisine and is open Wednesday through Saturday for dinner, as well as weekend brunch. Guests can also stop in the bar for a cocktail, local craft beer or glass of wine before exploring the town.

Southern charm with friendly staff. Close to downtown

We had an absolutely wonderful experience. This hotel is the perfect middle ground between a bed and breakfast and a cold chain hotel. It was warm and inviting. The staff was wonderful but also gave us our space. We had dinner at the restaurant which was simply amazing. And being so close to shops and restaurants in not only Black Mountain but Asheville as well was perfect. We will definitely be back.

We love Black Mountain, Montreat and all that surrounds it. The hotel is a gem. Peaceful and a perfect setting for the mountains. We will go back. A great staff, enjoyed the restaurant and sitting out on the patio. Charming....

Food in restaurant is great. Nice patio and downstairs common area comfortable

Lack of attention to detail in rooms. A wet bar with no water hookup is considered an upgrade and two leather chairs with peeling leather. Lightbulb out. No extra blanket or thermostat in room. Taft did not remove glasses from prior day use. When I asked what the wet bar was door the replay was “to wash things”. My next question is “wash what things?” Room was on third floor no elevator and the young man did not even offer this old woman assistance with bag. There appeared to be no oversight as to customer service in rooms.

Good breakfast. Able to play games and cards in lobby area. Liked the decor.

Thin walls, noisy group late at night in halls. Slamming doors. Small room. Dead ferns hanging on front porch. Porch furniture was ratty.

Location is great.

Very noisy hotel for sleeping. Guest rooms are very close and if guests are out late it is impossible to sleep through the noise of their return. Cleaning staff did not replenish towels after taking dirty ones. We had to go to the front desk to get them. Also, if you are staying in a room without a TV and plan to read, some rooms do not have night stands or lamps. We had to ask if we could get some type of table and lamp. The front desk was very accommodating so that made our experience better. The hotel could be great with some TLC, like changing out dead plants and sprucing up the front porch furniture to give a better appearance upon arrival.

The only negative was no elevator. We are aging(72- with. BAd knees,80) so carrying bags was hard. Also needed handle at bathtub as it was deep and hard to get in or out. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room needed a table to play cards as there was no TV. Tables were in lobby but that meant those stairs.

Very quaint hope they make it.
