"We loved the historic hotel with all its charm. Our corner room had windows on two sides which let in the winter sunlight which made it so welcoming and cozy. The room was large with a quilted bedspread and older decor to compliment. Complimentary breakfast, nice bar/restaurant on premises, outside seating with fire pit or just sit on front porch (blanket included) and relax. Great location as we were in walking distance of historic downtown which we visited breweries, eateries, shopped the various gift stores, etc."

Overview

Opened in 1937, the Monte Vista Hotel is housed in a former schoolhouse and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout its lifetime, the property has added a second structure and undergone renovations to offer modern amenities. Located in Black Mountain, the boutique hotel is a five-minute walk from the charming town square’s restaurants, shops and museums. The surrounding area offers year-round outdoor activities including skiing, hiking and winery tours.

The intimate hotel has only 45 guest rooms, each uniquely outfitted with mountain-inspired décor. All accommodations include hardwood floors, Wi-Fi, bottled water and king or queen beds. Bathrooms feature showers and tubs, vessel sinks and rustic tilework. In keeping with the quaint, mountain retreat vibe, rooms do not include televisions.

Milton’s, the on-site restaurant, sources regional ingredients for its Southern cuisine and is open Wednesday through Saturday for dinner, as well as weekend brunch. Guests can also stop in the bar for a cocktail, local craft beer or glass of wine before exploring the town.

No TVs or phone in room which enhanced our stay. Loved the creaky floors as it added extra charm.

Beautiful hotel and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We were there in January which is the off season and would like to return in the summer or fall.

Front desk staff was excellent especially Christian. Quaint town with lots of things to do. White Horse Music Hall is a great source of evening entertainment. Only one small concern - hot water could be a little hotter.

The hotel is charming with a very attentive staff, cozy indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, and a great bar and restaurant, and it is in convenient walking distance to some other great bars, restaurants, and shops. If you are looking for flat screen TVs and a sterile modern environment with all the latest gadgets, this is not for you. But if you can appreciate creaky wood floors in the bedroom, retro tile in the bathroom, and see walking up and down a couple flights of stairs as good exercise rather than an annoyance (or an impossibility), you are likely to love it here, as we did. Note there are some first floor rooms, and I thought I saw mention that some rooms have TVs, so you'd have to ask if either convenience is important to you. Also no mini-fridge in our room, but we didn't need one. Dinner Saturday night and Sunday brunch were both delicious. The continental breakfast was more than sufficient to get us going in the morning. It included good local coffee, a nice selection of teas, a different pastry each day, several bread styles (sliced bread, english muffins, etc.), hard boiled eggs, yogurts and some toppings, and instant oatmeal packets. We also highly recommend the Butcher Bar for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a trip to the local distillery, Oak and Grist.

The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean. If you are a light sleeper, this isn't the place for you. We could hear almost everything from our neighbors to the sides of us and above us, as well as all traffic from the outside and we were not in the front of the building. The people that work there couldn't be any nicer.

Restaurant closed on Monday and Tuesday. Nice continental breakfast. We stayed in the ground floor wing so we didn't have to carry bags upstairs. Bathrooms are more modern in this wing but needed work.

As we ponder that The Monte Vista Hotel is on the National Registry of Historic Places, we understand that many that come here may be expecting finer appointments, but it is the charm and memories of days past that make this inn so appealing. The hardwood flooring throughout made for an exceptionally clean environment. The staff was fun and appreciative, as we were to them. Milton's the in-house restaurant was delicious and delightful. A fun time indeed!!
