Overview

The BridgeHouse Hotel in Dorset has been named as one of Britain's 50 cosiest hotels by The Daily Telegraph, which praises its "snug bar, inglenook fireplaces, oak beams and handsome bedrooms".

The 700-year-old property is set by the River Brit in Beaminster formerly a priest's house. The property has won a Fabulous Food Award from Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay which sums it up nicely -- "a chic hotel in a pretty country town with excellent food, stylish bedrooms and hills all around for deep country walks".

Dine in the 2-AA-Rosette Beaminster Brasserie, which serves classic British dishes and focuses on local produce -- think home-made bread, Dorset lamb and Lyme Bay seafood. Menus vary depending on the season and availability of produce. During warmer evenings the brasserie menu is available -- perfect for dining on the terrace or in the Sun Room conservatory.

All of the 13 individually designed ensuite bedrooms come with free Wi-Fi, Italian linen, guest robes and tea and coffee-making facilities. Deluxe, Four Poster and Superior rooms are in the main house and most Superior rooms have garden views. In 1995 the old stables were converted into the CoachHouse, a detached building at the rear of hotel offering country-style accommodation. There are two family suites and four pet-friendly bedrooms.

The hotel is less than 15-minutes' drive from the Jurassic Coast -- where "Broadchurch" was filmed -- which spans 95 miles and is peppered with geological gems. The hotel is the perfect location for walking holidays and there's plenty to do in the local area. Lyme Regis, a picturesque seaside town set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a 30-minute drive away. Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are a 50-minute drive away.

From the press:

  • "This 13th-century farmhouse is just the spot to hide away for the weekend" -- The Daily Telegraph

  • "It's intimate, friendly and deeply comfortable" -- Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay

Enjoyed Most: Charming 14th century place with a very unique bar, with a great barman. Nice room.
Other Comments: they forgot to serve us canapé's and when we reminded them the warm canapé's came out cold. The food took ages to come to the table and when it did my main meal was cold and had to send it back. My wife had finished her food when mine came back out, my wife was very ill in the night, which she put down to the luke warm and chewy pork belly. Breakfast took 40 minutes and there was only 8 people in the restaurant...sausages were not locally sourced as they were just plan bog standard shop sausages, mature woman was also very rude, very disappointing visit.

Enjoyed Most: We enjoyed everything but, if we had to choose, it would be the food, which was exceptionally good.
Other Comments: We look forward to returning to the Bridge House. The staff were welcoming and very friendly and, despite being busy, made time to chat. The room was very comfortable and - deep joy - there was no music in the restaurant. We are very hapy to recommend this hotel.

Enjoyed Most: 1. The hotel is cosy and the room we stayed was nice - though it was too big for us. 2. The breakfast was good. 3. The hotel location is not the best, it's close to a busy road - but there was not much noise at night as we kept the window closed and also the curtains protected from the noise.
Other Comments: 1. Difficulty to book the hotel on the days that suited us better. As a result we had to take two days off work. 2. The admin was not really welcoming when we arrived 30 mins before the check in time. The same about the staff serving at the restaurant. Also they made a few mistakes while serving - it seemed that the staff was on training. The dinner itself was acceptable but side dishes were cold. As I understand they were very short of staff on that day (Sunday). 3. We had an upgrade on the room though we didn't ask about it. As I understand they were half booked and we had a chance to stay at the family room, though there was no need for that. But my husband and I appreciated it. 4. There was a mistake with the bill - we've been charged for the dinner that was a part of the offer. I paid for the drinks but the cost was twice higher than I expected though I had only two glasses of wine. I didn't complain about it as we already pointed to their mistake with the dinner.
