"Hotel is a lovely Grand building in a great position. We met with friends for a weekend of sightseeing and therefore the hotel could not be better positioned. Breakfasts were of a good variety and quality. Dinner was good, not a huge menu which helps with the decision making. Rooms are nicely furnished but just not big enough, bathroom-modern with lovely shower, no bath. Hotel has a general relaxed feel to it."

Overview

The Principal York is a "charming" (The AA) former railway hotel adjacent to York railway station. The grand Victorian building is set in three acres of landscaped gardens and is 10 minutes' walk from York Minster.

The hotel has views of the Minster and many of the city's famous landmarks. The city walls are less than five minutes' walk from the hotel, while the Shambles -- York's most well-known street, lined with independent shops in crooked Tudor buildings – is around 15 minutes' walk away. Inside the city walls there are also plenty of bars and restaurants to try.

The Chapter House bar and The Refectory Kitchen and Terrace restaurant feature exposed brick and industrial lighting, which The Daily Telegraph describes as a "funkier" contrast to the "stylish yet refreshingly calm" design of the rest of the hotel. The hotel was designed by award-winning interior architects Goddard Littlefair, who have won Interior Designer of The Year 2017 at the Build Awards and has designed many other high-end hotels, including The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland and the Corinthia Hotel Budapest. The Daily Telegraph adds you can expect "traditional, luxury-hotel" service from the second you check in.

The hotel's leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a gym and a steam room. Rooms are "sleek and understated" (The Daily Telegraph), some with marble bathrooms.

The staff were in the main as helpful as possible and tried to rectify matters although acknowledged it was not good enough and they were unable at the time to do anything further.

We booked for 3 nights to visit our daughter following previous enjoyable stays at The Principal York We have had a very stressful year as a family due to bereavements and the stay at the Principal was both to see my daughter and her partner after these events and the stay at the hotel was considered a 'treat ' and was looked forward to. We requested a quiet room ' if possible' and following a six hour journey and a 4.30 am start we were looking forward to a good nights sleep. However, the room allocated to us was at the back of the hotel and we were kept awake from 3 am with nose from bin lorries, delivery lorries and delivery crates . The following morning / day we had the strangest breakfast experience - it was chaotic, not enough staff, waiting 20 mins for a hot drinks, the roof above was leaking onto my seat, we were moved and then had no side plates and knives - on top of minimal sleep this was really frustrating, food was lukewarm, the scrambled eggs has become a huge omelette. We were so disappointed we chose not to have the breakfast that had been paid for the following morning and spent Saturday feeling unwell / exhausted after such a long journey and minimal sleep which completely detracted from the time with my daughter and our time in York . After speaking to staff, we were moved to a quieter room, it was indeed much quieter but it was in the annexe - we had not wished to stay in the annexe due to the distance to the main hotel and a current back problem affecting my mobility , we however slept a little better but woke to no water pressure - a shower was like a wet mist in the dales. The room also had a foul smell from the drains. Additionally we were unable to park at the hotel on Saturday night due to a wedding and had to park in the station overflow, again we did not know how far this was from the hotel and it wasn't great in the pouring rain. We advised staff of these issues, we were offered a complimentary nights stay, we have not yet received confirmation of this and due to the distance we have to travel to visit my daughter would need our usual 3 night stay and I am uncertain if we would be prepared to risk paying for an additional 2 nights to receive the same poor experience. On the last morning we chanced breakfast again, on the whole it was better but the coffee was not drinkable, the staff were advised of this and it appeared the machine was faulty - staff were unable to use the other coffee machine. I am not one to complain' but this was a really poor experience particularly after our previous lovely stays at the hotel and we returned home both exhausted and disappointed and feeling we had spent a lot of money on nothing. The staff were in the main as helpful as possible and the accommodation was clean but the room careworn.

Although we enjoyed our stay we would not return because the bed and bedroom was too small. Bed was a small double and pushed against the wall to allow access around the room, meaning you climbed over your partner to get out of bed disturbing their sleep. Our room was very warm, we needed the window open for the duration however being on the main road meant the room was noisy. The bed was small and not good quality each time either myself or partner moved the whole bed moved. At almost £200 per night we expected more comfort, on this basis we would not return.
